The 8th Nigeria Breweries/Ibadan Recreation Club Open tennis tournament has ended in Ibadan with Nigeria’s number one tennis star, Abdulmumini Babalola, defeating Kunle Bamidele 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final match played at IRC clay court. In the Veteran Doubles final, Biodun Akinlotan and Yomi Taiwo beat Adeoye Adesoye and Dapo Adegoke 6-3,3-6, 6-0.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Breweries Limited, Mr Nicolaas Velverde, who was represented at the tournament by the Public Affairs Manager of the company, Mr. Tayo Adelaja, described the standard of the tournament as high. He added that Nigeria could make a statement in world tennis if the talents were nurtured appropriately.
“I am highly impressed with what I saw during the tournament. There are players with the ability to develop and rank among world best players but they need to be exposed to top class training facility and classy trainer. In the overall, I am happy with their display and level of professionalism,” he said, adding that the company would sustain its status as a socially responsible establishment, through sponsorship of sports programmes in the country.
President of IRC, Mr. Adeoye Adesoye, and Chairman of the Club’s Tennis Section, Bosun Fadare, thanked the sponsors for their invaluable contributions to the growth of tennis in Nigeria.
