A former Deputy Senate President and delegate to the National Conference, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, has assured Nigerians that the report of the ongoing confab will be adopted and approved by the National Assembly.
Mantu stated this in Abuja at the Inauguration of the Goodluck Development Foundation being coordinated by its Director – General, Mr. Tom Toriah, which is seeking support for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.
He expressed confidence that unlike the report of other conferences in the past, the Presidency would forward the current one to the National Assembly and that the federal lawmakers would fast-track the process of its implementation.
He said, “I want to give kudos to the secretariat of the National Conference because they are thinking ahead. Our duty as delegates is just to produce a report and make sure that what is contained in the report reflect our resolve on the floor of the conference.
“However, the secretariat went ahead to even produce a copy of the constitution which captured everything that we agreed upon at the plenary. They did that to fast-track the process.
“By so doing, I have no doubt that in my mind that when the Presidency receives the report, they will forward it to the National Assembly to begin the process of turning it to an act of parliament.
“So, I believe that the report of the National Conference will not go in the way of previous ones which ended up in the dustbin of history. It will see the light of the day.”
Mantu pledged that as a former ranking senator, he would personally speak with some of his friends in the National Assembly to fast-track the process of implementing the report.
According to him, “They (National Assembly members) are our colleagues and we will encourage them to fast-track the process. Already the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma – Egba, had promised that the National Assembly will fast-track the process of actualising our dream into reality.”
Mantu who is the Chairman, Elders Council of the Goodluck Jonathan Support Groups, said Jonathan had succeeded in laying a solid foundation for the greatness of Nigeria.
He said, “Jonathan has laid a good foundation but Nigerians are in a hurry, they are saying they have not seen results. I have no doubt in my mind that that the identification of a problem is the beginning of finding solution.
“Nigerians are now happy that very soon, we will be having stable power supply, effective communication sub sector, and other infrastructure. He had started fighting poverty headlong by creating youth employment opportunities.
“By the time we have stable power, there will be heavy industrialisation which will see many Nigerians being employed. He should be allowed to continue in office so that he would be able to actualise most of our dreams.”
