The Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Dr. Emmanuel Ekemejewa Sideso, Abe 1, JP, OON on Friday(14/11/2025) expressed concern over the falling standard of education in the country, when he gave out N8.6 million cheques to 297 beneficiaries under the Uvwie Scholarship scheme
He blamed the falling standard of education on failure of society, particularly parents who don’t guide their children properly as most of them engaged in pursuit of earthly glory without paying enough attention to their children’s education progress but would rather buy expensive phones for them, allow them to over indulge in watching television and they don’t read their books.
Abe 1 enjoined parents to remember the importance of education particularly at the primary level, noting that most of the children who took the scholarship examination did not perform to standard this year and that he had to lower the pass mark this year to allow more children to benefit from the scholarship
According to him this may not be repeated next year and that he has personally advised the children that they must concentrate on their books as a way of showing appreciation to the donors particularly the state government, chiefs and others
He said the performance of children must be improved if the scholarship scheme was to continue as council of chiefs and the government was ready to continue with the scheme no matter the cost so long as the children perform excellently.
Speaking earlier, the chairman, Uvwie Education/Scholarship Committee, Dr. Chief Samuel Eshenake noted that since his ascension onto the throne in February 18th, 2008, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom has been granting scholarship yearly to Uvwie indigenes and other residents in the Kingdom without fail
He spoke further, “Today we are giving cheques to 297 candidates worth N8,605,000. The 297 candidates is made up of 74 new beneficiaries selected on merit after a rigorous examination and 223 existing beneficiaries.
“The new beneficiaries are made up of 28 students in primary schools, 45 in junior secondary school and one in senior secondary school
