There is no doubt that the pulse is very high on the fear of imminent collapse of the state of Nigeria. This fear is eating up many of us because we have been working and walking on the path of “Let my will be done,” instead of “Let the Will of the Almighty Father be done.” We have abandoned history of the nation that should have strengthened our “Unity in Diversity” and pursued actualising our path of selfish desires that will lead to perdition.
I am not a good historian, but I do remember important things that happened in my own way of experiencing the world we live in. In 1999, former President Olusegun Obasanjo(OBJ) was drafted to contest the election on PDP platform, a move made and championed by the former Military President, General Ibrahim Gbamoshi Babangida(IBB). He made this move to calm down the nerves, as a compensation to the Yorubas for annulling the 1993 election worn by Chief M.K.O. Abiola, a Yoruba man.
President Obasanjo was elected, and I do remember in one of his Media interactions, he was asked What is it that he wants to achieve for the nation, since at that time PDP did not even present any manifesto because the drive was just to disengage the Military rule. OBJ replied that his only aim is to keep Nigeria one. This was the Slogan of the Nigerian Military against the Biafrians during the civil war, of which President Obasanjo fought on the side of Nigeria. And it was actually OBJ that received the surrender note from General Philip Effiong. President Obasanjo all through his Presidency continued this fight by leveling Odi in Rivers State, Zakibiam in Benue State and their inhabitants, with impunity.
President Obasanjo plotted and imposed late President Yaradua on PDP, with Goodluck Ebele Jonathan(GEJ) as his vice-President. The choice of Yaradua was to compensate the Northerners for the death of late General Musa Yaradua, who died in prison during General Sani Abacha’s regime. Both OBJ and Musa Yaradua were sent to prison for coup plotting against Abacha, awaiting possible execution.
President Obasanjo made Yaradua/Jonathan ticket possible in the full awareness that medical reports have indicated President Yaradua will not live long, hence Jonathan will become President to compensate the Niger-Delta people for the degradation and pollution of their land in oil explorations. Obviously, the Niger-Delta people struggling on their own to be produce the President of this country, would have remained a mirage if not for this move. Of course, working and walking on “Let my will be done,” things fell apart OBJ could not get along with GEJ as the centre could not hold.
Therefore, just for vendetta, OBJ gave support to General Muhammadu Buhari(GMB, now PMB) becoming the President. Here too things have fallen apart and the centre seems not to hold between PMB and OBJ, because I believe there must be a payback that must accrue to OBJ which is always the point of disagreement between OBJ and whoever he chooses to favour.
Upon all noise being clamoured for a change, President Muhammadu Buhari seems not be having a compass or rudder to be giving directions on what to do. Fighting corruption in his own way has heightened corruption at all levels. All the constructive suggestions being made as to mean helping to build a One Nigeria seem to be falling on deaf ears. The only thing that seems very obvious, is the President working to be supporting the cause of Islamic Principles. Is it not an irony that in Nigeria that even if all of us agree to embrace Islam as religion, as long as you are a Southern, you are an infidel who can be toyed with without the fear of God(Allah). All of these have driven Nigerians to start coming to terms that the disintegration of the country is now at hand under this administration. More so, OBJ is also confused as who to support this time around to actualise his desire to keep Nigeria one. The disintegration of Nigeria will also mean the end of the road for OBJ and his relevance in Nigeria and global politics.
This will be the unfortunate end of Nigeria, and the whole world as the ripple effects will affect other nations globally. Nigeria is a called nation with a responsibility to fulfill. However, even though we see God as being forever patient, there is a limit to His endurance. Examples abound in the Bible in the history of the Israelites. He(God) brought down the Tower of Babel, destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and used the Babylonians to destroy His own Temple in Jerusalem. Nigeria cannot be any different, if our leaders and people remain unrepentant.
