A lecturer at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has been arrested in a hotel, trying to sleep with one of his students. The lecturer, names withheld, was arrested naked at the Wembley Hotel in the University town with the student, Esther Omokinovo, who arranged the arrest.
The victim told the police on July 19, last month, that her Course Adviser in Primary/ Nursery Education Department at the University has been harassing her sexually and threatening to fail her if she refused to yield to his sexual desire.
Two days after, during Mathematics examination, the victim raced to the police station to inform detectives that she has agreed for a particular date for sex with the lecturer.
The state Commissioner of Police, Zanna Muhammed Ibrahim, at the command headquarters in Asaba, yesterday, said the lecturer was caught naked and ready to take on the student.
“Based on the complainant’s feigned acceptance of the suspect’s demand, she was taken to Wembley hotel, Abraka, by the suspect on, where detectives were invited and arrested him in the hotel room after he had already undressed,” he said.

I welcome you once again to the State Headquarters Asaba to brief you on our achievements in recent weeks in delivering on our constitutional mandate of protection of lives and property. From our records, our battle against crime and criminalities is yielding positive result as we continue to witness reduction of crime wave in the State. The achievements were made possible through our collaboration with sister security agencies, the vigilante groups and well-meaning people of the state. We shall maintain the tempo and appreciate the continuous support of members of the public in order to drastically checkmate criminal activities in all parts of the state.
In our avowed determination to reduce cultism to the barest minimum in the Command, a Special Anti Cult Unit has been established to take the war against cultism to wherever cultists may be found in all nooks and crannies of the state. I wish to state that this is a war we have to win so as to stop careless wastage of the lives of our youths occasioned by cult clashes. In this regard, I appeal to parents and guardians to be alive to their responsibilities in providing proper guidance to their children/wards.
Listed hereunder are some of the command’s breakthroughs within the period under review.
1. ‘C’ DIVISION ASABA/SARS
ARREST OF SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERS AND
RECOVERY OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION:
On 26/7/2016 the police, while acting on a tip off arrested one Usman Adama ‘m’ of Sokoto state, Yakubu Alhashimin ‘m’ and Alfa Shaibu ‘m’ at Abraka market Asaba. The suspects are members of a robbery gang terrorising Asaba and environs. During investigation, the suspects gave information which led to the arrest of two more suspects, Murtala Mohammed ‘m’ and Umar Sani ‘m’ who are said to be members of a kidnapping syndicate.
Items recovered from the suspects included:
i. Nineteen (19) AK.47 live ammunition
ii. One (1) locally made pistol with live (2) cartridges.
iii. Twenty-one (21) handsets.
iv. Eleven (11) cutlasses.
v. Three (3) daggers
vi. Two (2) cameras
vii. Two (2) wrist watches.
viii. Charms
ix. The sum of twenty-six thousand naira (N26, 000.00) cash.
x. A sack containing lace materials.
Investigation is in progress.
2. OTOR-OWHE DIVISION/SCID
WOUNDING
On 31/7/2016 one Sunday Ekure ‘m’ of Uruokpokpo reported at the Otor-Owhe police station that on 30/7/2016 at about 1700hrs, while one Jude Morgan, aged 28yrs was fighting with his brother, Ekure Morgan ‘m’, 44yrs over a land matter at Emevor, the said Jude Morgan chopped off Ekure Morgan’s left hand palm by the wrist with a cutlass. The suspect was arrested.
Meanwhile, the victim is receiving treatment in the hospital, while investigation is ongoing at SCID Asaba.
3. SPECIAL ANTI-KIDNAPPING SQUAD (SAKS) ASABA
ARREST OF HUMAN TRAFFICKERS/RESCUE OF VICTIMS
On 1/8/2016 at about 2300hrs while acting on a tip off, the officer in charge Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad Asaba led operatives to a hideout along Okpanam road Asaba and rescued three female human trafficking victims namely: Chinyere Ude, 19yrs, Happiness Igwe, 20yrs and Esther Frank, 17yrs. The victims who are all with advanced pregnancies revealed that they were brought to the hideout by one Uju Okonkwo ‘f’, a fake nurse working at Chinonso Hospital, Nkpor in Anambra state for the purpose of selling their children after delivery.
Meanwhile, on 2/8/2016 at about 1430hrs after intensive surveillance by operatives the said Uju Okonkwo was arrested. Also arrested is a fake lawyer, Ezurum Joseph ‘m’ that provided the hideout where the victims were harboured.
The suspects are helping the police in investigation and will soon be arraigned in court.
4. EKPAN DIVISION
ARREST OF SUSPECTED ARMED
ROBBERS/RECOVERY OF FIRE ARM
On 3/8/2016 at about 0830hrs while acting on a tip off, Anti Crime patrol team code named Operation Jakpaattached to Ekpan Division stormed Udumorugbo quarters Jakpa and arrested four suspected dare-devil armed robbers. During investigation the suspects gave their names as Oghene Kowhiro Ogharara ‘m’ – alias Kowi, Chinedu Nwankwegu ‘m’ – alias Ibo boy, Nelson Odemero ‘m’- alias Yobo, and Goodluck Sunday ‘m’ – alias Gabis.
Exhibits recovered included one locally made single barrel pistol with one live cartridge and a knife.
A Crowd besieged the division in jubilation over the arrest of the suspects who have been terrorizing the area.
Investigation is in progress.
5. SAPELE DIVISION/SCID
On the 21st of July, 2016, a woman residing at Fobie Lane, off new road Sapele reported at the Police station Sapele that on 19/7/2016 her daughter aged 7 yrs went out to play with other children in their neighbourhood. However, the daughter returned home later, crying and complaining of pain in her private part. On close observation the mother discovered protrusion and bleeding in the minor’s genital. The victim revealed to her mother that one Papa Rukewe had dragged her to his backyard and put one of his hands inside her private part while using the other hand to cover her mouth to prevent her from shouting out. She added that the suspect later had carnal knowledge of her.
The said Papa Rukevwe has been arrested and undergoing investigation.
6. ‘B’ DIVISION ASABA/SCID
DEFILEMENT
On 28/7/2016 it was reported at the ‘B’ Division police station Asaba that on 20/7/2016 one Pastor Ubaka Chukwuka ‘m’ of Love & Mercy Ministry, Akwuofu area, by Koka junction, Asaba defiled an eight years old girl in his residence. It was further revealed that on the day of the incident, the victim and other children, including the pastor’s children were playing in the pastor’s compound when the cleric ordered his children and the rest children to go outside the compound to play while he invited the victim into his room and had carnal knowledge of her. As a result, the victim started experiencing severe pain in her private part after a week and consequently reported the incident to her parents.
Meanwhile, the said pastor Ubaka Chukwuka has been arrested and undergoing investigation.
7. OVWIAN ALADJA DIVISION/SCID
ARREST OF MURDER SUSPECTS
On 15/7/2016 at about 1700hrs the DPO in charge Ovwian Aladja Division received information that some notorious criminals murdered one Shedrack Ekokodje ‘m’ alias ‘50’ and later dumped the corpse in the deceased’s father’s compound at Yola street DSC township Aladja.
Sequel to the report, detectives commenced investigation which paid off on 16/7/2016 with the arrest of two principal suspects, one Sunday Rume ‘m’, 20yrs and Churchill Samson ‘m’, 24yrs at various points within Orhuworhun town. The suspects confessed to the crime and revealed how the deceased who was a member of Arrow Baggar cult group and the next to succeed the late Capon of the cult group, was lured by them and six others led by one Prince Eweter (also interested in the position) now at large, to Agbada water side bush where he was tortured to death and his corpse dropped outside his father’s compound.
Investigation is in progress while efforts are on to round up their cohorts.
8. NSUKWA DIVISION/STATE ANTI-CULT UNIT
ARRES OF SUSPECTED CULTISTS
On 7/7/2016 a group of young men and women suspected to be members of Ayes confraternity armed with guns, cutlasses and other weapons went on rampage in Nsukwa community, attacked some persons, destroyed properties and looted money and other valuables estimated at over N7, 751,000.00 and thereafter went underground.
However, on 27/7/2016, the same group of cultists, armed with dangerous weapons attacked the village market and dispossessed traders of their wares/belongings. Sequel to that, detectives embarked on investigation and carried out intensive raid of the area and arrested ten suspects who participated in the mayhem namely: Patience Ashinze ‘f’, Nwaka Faith ‘f’, Ifeoma Benita Ogbolu ‘f’, Sunday Blessing ‘f’, Azubuike Chijeni ‘m’ aka Mosquito, Gorge Igwe ‘m’ aka Native doctor, Nkadi Blessing ‘f’, Obi Odumma ‘f’, Oluchukwu Okafor ‘m’, Ezenna Isaac and Azuka Okoh ‘m’.
Meanwhile, the suspects are undergoing investigation and will be arraigned in court thereafter.
9. DRAGON PATROL/EKPAN DIVISION
ARREST OF SUSPECTED CAR SNATCHER/RECOVERY
OF SNATCHED VEHICLE
On 4/8/2016 at about 0600hours Dragon team on motorized patrol along Warri/Sapele road suspected and intercepted one Toyota Camry (Spider) saloon car Reg. No Lagos Eky 59 CP, Chassis No.4TIBE46K57U50422; engine No.2AZ8448756 driven by one Okafor Kingsley (m), 417N of No. 10 Sabon Gari Kaduna. When the driver was being questioned by patrol men he jumped into the bush in a bid to escape, but he was pursued and arrested. The suspect claimed that he brought the vehicle the previous evening at the rate of N400.000.00 from one Chinedu ‘m’ (surname and address unknown). However, as patrol men were searching the vehicle a call was received from one Alvan Ifeanyi (m) of Otiotio Street Janpa road, Effurun through a handset found in the car and revealed that the said car was snatched from his son on 3/8/2016 at about 1930hours by three armed men along Otokutu road Warri.
Exhibit recovered from the suspect was the said Toyota Camry Car Reg. No. Lagos EKY 59 CP.
Investigation is in progress.
10. OTU-JEREMI DIVISION
ARREST OF SUSPECTED VANDALS
On 31/07/2016 at about 0500hrs one Owe Kaku ‘m’ a vigilante Chairman, Otujeremi town arrested one Alloja Kase ‘m’ and Ese Jacob ‘m’ reported that while on patrol with his men at Abura Oil pipeline, he met the two suspects and others at large vandalizing oil pipeline and were arrested.
Exhibits recovered from the scene included three saw blades. Case is under investigation while effort is ongoing to arrest the other culprits.
11. SARS
ARREST OF VEHICLE THIEF/RECOVERY OF STOLEN VEHICLE
On 28/7/2016 at about 1600hrs, SARS Patrol team on routine patrol along Illah road sighted one Mack truck with Reg. No. EZA 201 XA parked in a suspicious place by one Chidebere Udezoe ‘m’. The said Chidebere Udezoe was promptly arrested and he confessed during interrogation that he stole the vehicle from his master.
The Mack truck Reg. No. EZA 201 XA was recovered to the station. Investigation is in progress.
12. ABRAKA DIVISION
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
On 21/7/2016 at about 1411hrs, one Esther Omokinovo ‘f’ reported that her course adviser one Akpokiniovo Akpesiri ‘m’ of Primary/Nursery Education Departmet, Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka has been harassing her sex and threatening that if she refused to yield to his sexual demands he would make her carry over some of her courses. She added that on 19/7/2016 during Maths examination she told the suspect that she had accepted her proposal, but before then she had reported the matter to the police station at Abraka.
Based on the complainant’s feigned acceptance of the suspect’s demand she was taken to Wembley hotel Abraka by the suspect on 21/7/16 where detectives were invited and arrested him in the hotel room after he had already undressed.
The case is under investigation.
13. AREA COMMAND/EKPAN DIVISION WARRI
DEATH OF SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBER/RECOVERY OF
FIRE ARMS AND AMMUNITIONS
On 1/8/2016 at 1800hrs an Anti-Robbery team intercepted a black coloured Volkewagen Jetta car with Reg. No. Delta AG 625 DSZ with four male occupants at PTI/Eku road. Team flagged them but instead opened fire. After exchange of fire one of the robbers was felled, the vehicle one K2 rifle no. 09700 with 12 rounds, one G3 rifle no. 8112982were recovered.
Case is under investigation.
14. PATANI DIVISION
ARREST OF KIDNAPPERS
On 3/8/2016 Yusuf Aboki ‘m’ 27yrs old of Plateau state, Daniel Doye 22yrs and Raymond (surname unknown) all of Bulliangiama were arrested for perpetrating kidnapping in Delta/Bayelsa states. Case under investigation.
15. SAFER HIGHWAY PATROL
ARREST OF FAKE SOLDIER
On 27/7/2016 at about 2000hrs, Safer Highway Patrol team on stop and search at Onicha-Ugbo junction arrested one Adah Joseph ‘m’ of Ofa L.G.A. Kogi State with army camouflage uniform and a Nokia handset concealed in a sack. The suspect could not give satisfactory account of himself.
The case is under investigation.
16. AREA COMMAND WARRI
(a) FOILED ROBBERY
On Thursday, 4/8/16 at about 1725hrs two armed robbers were shot dead. Suspects are alleged to have attempted to rob one Akpoyibo Omoefe ‘m’ of Delta Waters/Land security committee. One Ogenebruwvie Patrick, 39yrs of Ughelli was shot dead by the robbers along NPA expressway near Government House Warri annex after withdrawing the sum of N2m. They however were unable to cart away the said money.
Efforts are on to arrest the runaway culprits.
(b) ARREST OF IMPERSONATOR
On 22/7/2016 men of 222 Battalion, Nigeria Army Ughelli arrested and handed over to the police one Moses Ushi ‘m’ aged 25yrs for impersonating a Naval Lieutenant. The suspect confessed to the crime.
Items recovered from him included one toy pistol, three pairs of Army face caps, one camouflage T. Shirt, five photo portraits of the suspect in Naval uniform, one horse whip and eight post card pictures of the suspect in Naval uniform.
Investigation is in progress.
(c) ARREST OF SUSPECTED KIDNAPER
On 4/8/2016 at about 1900hrs, while acting on a tip off, Anti-Crime patrol team from Area Commander’s office Warri trailed and arrested one Chukwuma Osanebi ‘m’ 32yrs, at Esisi area of Okere-Warri for attempting to kidnap one Mrs. Ajuya (surname unknown). The suspect confessed to the crime and mentioned the mastermind of the foiled kidnap now at large.
Investigation is ongoing while efforts are on to apprehend other members of the criminal gang.
Finally, it is worthy of note that within the period under review eight suspected cultists and three suspected armed robbers were charged to court. The Command wishes to warn that any criminal arrested will be dealt with according to the laws of the land irrespective of his/her status.
