Senator representing Delta Central in the National Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has expressed optimism over possibility of amicable resolution of the current leadership crisis rocking the Urhobo Progress Union, harping on sacrifices, and consensus building in the task of reinventing UPU for the task ahead of Urhobo nation.
He spoke on Sunday April 17, 2016 in Warri when Chief Mrs Owhojeheri led Urhobo women leaders from all 24 Urhobo Kingdoms paid a courtesy call to the Senator over the UPU leadership question.
Addressing his guests, Senator Omo-Agege commended the women for taking the challenge to reach out to Urhobo leaders with a view to finding solutions to the problems bedeviling the UPU, assuring that he was on the same page with the women and that Urhobo cannot divide in his time as senator for the Urhobo nation.
‘’I must commend you for the concern you have demonstrated in reaching out to Urhobo leaders on the way out of the current challenges before Urhobo. I am fully committed to the task of ensuring Urhobo is united. The task is an enormous one considering the fact that presently there are three factions of UPU. We have Chief Joe Omene who was elected with the Late General Patrick Aziza, we have Chief Gabriel Ofotokun, put in place by the Kings, and finally the Chief Tuesday Onoge faction. If we allow things to continue this way, we may end up having three congresses by December which will produce three UPU Excos to further polarize Urhobo. This is not the time to apportion blames. Our Kings own the land but things must be done properly so as not to trample on the UPU constitution. What I can assure you is that there is hope of amicable resolution of the impasse so that the three factions can work together and deliver a brand new Exco for UPU by December 2016. That is my focus and I am already reaching out to critical stakeholders towards resolution of the crisis’’, Omo-Agege assured the Ewheya Urhobo.
He called for sacrifices by all those at the centre of the crisis, urging for the promotion of Urhobo interest above personal interest and ego. He decried the attitude of some politicians whose conducts suggest that loyalty to political party takes precedent over loyalty to Urhobo nation.
‘’That is not the right attitude to Urhobo. Political parties come and go but Urhobo will always be there. Therefore Urhobo people must learn to ensure the interest of Urhobo takes precedent in their politics and other engagements of life’’, he added.
Earlier in her presentation, leader of the Ewheya Urhobo, Chief Mrs Owhojeheri, on behalf of all the women folks in Urhobo land, expressed deep pains over the disunity in Urhobo, which has snowballed into several factions of the UPU. She disclosed that the development was of grave concern to the women hence the decision to move round Urhobo leaders and Monarchs to appeal for amicable resolution of the crisis. She disclosed that the women had visited the Owhorode of Olomu, General Obada, Chief Joe Omene, Chief Tuesday Onoge and many other strategic Urhobo leaders with the message of Urhobo unity and the need to tackle the current challenge together. The women pleaded with Senator Omo-Agege to use his good offices as the number one political office holder in Urhobo land to reach out to other Urhobo leaders towards amicable resolution of the crisis.
At the end of the day, the women expressed joy and satisfaction with Senator Omo-Agege’s avowed commitment towards wading into the matter to arrest the ugly slide of Urhobo into deeper crisis with many complicated consequences.
