One hears and reads this stereotyped parting words which many members of the society express towards their departing ones. The fact that the same words are said to a wicked man, a murder, as well as to a good man will already point to the reality, which is that it is wrong. Is it also not said that ‘there is no rest for the wicked!’
Indeed, there is no rest for any soul, and the reason is as follows:
The human being is composed of the spirit, which is the real essence or life giving force to the soul, and then the physical body which should serve as a tool to the spirit while here on earth. When the physical body is laid aside, through old age, disease or destruction from an auto or aeroplane crash, or through whatever other reasons, the soul detaches from that physical body.
Later the physical body is put into the earth or grave, where it decomposes, thereby fulfilling the statement ‘dust-to-dust’, ‘ashes-to-ashes’. When this happens the detached soul moves on, now in its ethereal form, and exists in the nearby plane commonly called the Beyond. But this detached soul is very much alive, and now made freer through the absence of the physical body which held it before as if in a prison yard.
It will be drawn here and there, especially according to the inner inclination and volition of that soul while on earth. Thus you will find that if it was someone who developed a deep seated propensity for one earthly pleasure or another, then such soul would be drawn to locations where that propensity is expressed. Same way for a soul that cultivated healthy volition for the good and noble. It will, in the ethereal beyond, be drawn to noble souls in lighter and more beautiful planes of the Beyond. Here too, there is no question of ‘rest’ or ‘rest-in-peace’— it is activity—joyful activity that should resound through all the planes of Creation.
Incidentally, those who express the wish ‘rest-in-peace’, also ironically believe in the resurrection; but they have a wrong understanding of resurrection. Resurrection does not mean that at an appointed time the graves would be turned open and those buried there, probably the skeletons or cremated forms would reconstitute and emerge again. No. This is not possible.
Resurrection is of the soul—and it is expressed in a steady uplifting of the inner maturity and development of the soul, to the point where it can enter its spiritual home, Paradise, as a conscious spirit. The process is one that if full of experiencing, which is another word for activity.
The Spiritual Law of Sowing and Reaping takes effect both in the physical plane we call earth, and in the invisible plane, which we call the Beyond. Every departing soul is confronted with events from its earthly sowing, and it must reap it in experiencing, not in a restful repose. Indeed, the wish, ‘rest-in-peace’ could be harmful if a soul takes to it, and thereby remains immobile, inactive and comatose in the Beyond. It could delay such soul’s spiritual progress.
