The Delta State House of Assembly has directed Councillors of Uvwie Local Govt Area to resume their legislative duties in the next two weeks or face the wrath of the law. Majority of the Councillors
are supporters of Hon Henry Baro who was recently removed by the Delta Assembly.
The directive followed a motion moved under matters of public importance by the Chairman, House Committee on Local Govt and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Azuka Azaka and seconded by Hon Sheriff Oborovwore representing Okpe constituency.
While opening debate on the motion, Hon Azaka said it became necessary following recent happening in Uvwie local government council, recounting that the House had set up an investigative panel to probe into the activities of the former chairman of Uvwie LG, Hon Henry Baro following petitions on alleged financial recklessness.
Hon Azaka who represents Ndokwa West constituency in the House argued that since September 11,2015 the erring Councillors had abandoned their legislative duties, thereby bringing the activities of the council to a halt.
The lawmaker noted that in line with the local govt laws the legislative arm of the local govt council should sit for a period of one hundred and twenty one days in a year, stressing that it was obvious that the Councillors of Uvwie local govt legislative arm had erred in law.
Hon Azaka warned that the House would be forced to invoke the relevant laws if the erring Councillors failed to comply on the directive of the House.
The majority leader, Hon Tim Owhefere who supported the motion alongside with Hon Ivans Ivwhurie and Hon Samuel Mariere said the House would not allow such flagrant abuse of the local govt laws by Uvwie Councillors.
They argued that the sitting days of the legislative arms were not optional, but constitutional, maintaining that the law must be obeyed and respected, stressing that the legislative arm of the council was too critical for the legislators to abdicate their legislative responsibility, adding that the House will not allow Uvwie to be in comatose.
The motion was unanimously adopted when put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Hon Monday Igbuya.
