Due to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, with a few reported cases in Nigeria, the International Committee of the Red Cross has embarked on a five-day training for 21 health officials to assist in preventing the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in the country.
The spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Nigeria, Aleksandra Mosimann, said in a statement sent to our correspondent on Thursday that the training would help in containing the spread of the virus to other states where it had not been reported.
She added that the training would help in the response of the trainees to health crisis in the country, especially in states where violent incidents had recently occurred.
She said, “We are collaborating with the Nigerian Red Cross Society to conduct an intensive, five-day refresher training in first aid for 21 participants in Abuja from August 18 to 22, 2014. All of the participants are NRCS first-aid trainers, coming from 10 different states, where violent incidents have recently occurred.”
The organisation’s official in charge of health programmes in Nigeria, Bernadette Gleeson, said, “The participants will take their skills back to their communities where they will train NRCS volunteers and others in first aid. These volunteers are often the first one called to the scenes of emergencies to evacuate casualties.”
