Dr. (Chief) Ogheneovoh Amurun, a UK-based security expert and CEO of Safenet Security Solution, has strongly condemned the brutal and unjustified killing of Mr. Oghenemine Ogidi by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State.
He a statement from London today, he noted the deceased had already been apprehended on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm and posed no immediate threat at the time of the incident. “The use of lethal force in such circumstances is deeply concerning and unacceptable in any modern policing system.”
According to him, International policing standards are governed by the principles of necessity, proportionality, legality, and accountability. As outlined in global frameworks such as the United Nations Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms, lethal force should only be employed as a last resort in situations involving imminent threat to life. The circumstances surrounding this incident suggest a serious lapse in adherence to these standards, pointing to deficiencies in training, judgment, and operational discipline.
Dr. Amurun pointed out that the incident reflects a broader systemic issue within the policing structure, particularly gaps in training related to threat assessment, de-escalation, rules of engagement, and responsible firearm use. Effective policing requires restraint, professionalism, and strict adherence to due process.
He further emphasized the urgent need for cultural reform within the police force, stressing that professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights must be central to policing practices.
Dr. Amurun called on the President of Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police, and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to take immediate action. He urged a comprehensive review of police training, increased resource allocation, and stronger accountability measures.
He concluded that justice must be served and meaningful reforms implemented to safeguard public trust and uphold the dignity and safety of all citizens.
