It was a new dawn In Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government area of Delta State on Tuesday, 22nd September, 2020, when the Central Council of Chiefs headed by Chief Peters Iffie with the blessings of the state government and the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom , HRM. Dr. Emmanuel E. Sideso, Abe 1, JP OON, successfully swore in a new Ekpan Development Committee(EDC) EXCO
The event is described as historic because for a long time political and community gladiators who have cornered the commonwealth of the people have politicised a simply traditional institution by engaging in frivolous petition writing to attract government intervention and undermine the will of the people. The EDC was set up by the Ekpan Council of Chiefs to see to the day to day administration of the community
An attempt again, to politicise the EDC election failed when the four Inuevworo decided to be on the same page to ensure a peaceful process despite initial glitches resulting in the state government allowing due process to be followed
The New EDC EXCO Members sworn in are as follows:
Chairman – Steven Akemu
Secretary – Mr. Patrick Eshenake
Treasurer – Umukoro Luke
Financial Secretary – Lilian Uruesheyi
Public Relations Officer – Mr. Daniel Ukwesa
Welfare Officer – Mr. Emmanuel Utuedor
Provost – Mr. Ovakpor Orode Ofudje
Legal Adviser – Barr. Sunday O. Agbashe
One of the Inuevworo described the current EDC EXCO as a “transitional government” and that in future very high moral standards will be required and mandatory as one of the qualifications for persons who aspire to any of the EDC EXCO positions. In fact, two aspirants were disqualified for engaging in acts of hooliganism during the last exercise thereby sending a strong signal to contestants that it would not be business as usual
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Iffie thanked the state government and HRM Dr. Sideso for their tireless efforts to ensure sustainable peace in Ekpan. The new EDC Chairman, Mr. Akemu, made a promise to sustain the current peace in the community.
Before the process was concluded yesterday, HRM Dr. Sideso had called several meetings of community leaders and his subjects, warning them that the era of “AK 45” was over and the peace process was irreversible saying, “Uvwie is now open for business and quality leadership.”
The Uvwie Monarch drives his peace process with the launching of Uvwie Scholarship Funds to reward youths who are ready to further their education to any level, as well as ensure that Uvwie graduates filled their quotas in government institutions and the private sector.
He has also introduced various programs with the support of the state government to take youths out of streets. With the support of the security agencies, investors and developers are protected against harassment.
In all the meetings held with community leaders, the Monarch often prayed for peace and progress in Uvwie and appealed to his children to align his agenda of togetherness and love for one another.
Chief Pius Omasanuwa once described the Uvwie Monarch as a rear gem and hoped that with the creation of etches(divisions) the tension in the communities will reduce. The Esirierha of Alegbor, Chief Dr. George Amurun, the Octogenerian most senior chief in Uvwie and Okere-Urhobo Kingdoms once described the Uvwie Monarch as a man with great wisdom, whose reign is bound to bring unprecedented peace and development to Uvwie.
