Rather than this 2023 presidential bait for South West, for me, a proper restructuring embedded in the constitution would be more like it.
Using the 1963 constitution as template would be a starting point. If regions can substantially control their resources, quite frankly, nobody would bother about Abuja.
If Awolowo introduced free education, built the Cocoa House, First tv station in sub-sahara Africa, Liberty Stadium et al, without help from Federal purse, it can still be replicated in the regions.
But this 2023 presidential bait for South West, to me, is just an election rhetoric. The political power principalities that broker such arrangements are not daft. These same principalities confronted Osinbajo during Buhari’s long medical leave. They thought Buhari would not make it and they started their shenanigans on how to cage Osinbajo.
Quote me, if Buhari wins next year, these principalities would not allow Osinbajo or Tinubu to take over in 2023. They are not foolish. But that is a matter for another day.
Right now, the South West is not strategising. But these political principalities and powers in the North are more far-sighted. They plan ten years ahead. But we South West people are good in rhetorics, bickering among yourselves with different “war Lords” trying to carve out their areas of influence. If they are not abusing Obasanjo today, it’s Tinubu tomorrow or PA Fashoranti or pa Adebanjo tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Northern principalities and powers are strategising and you think they would just hand over the presidency to you in 2023 a la carte? No way.
