Tragedy struck in Auchi Polytechnic Weekend as a female graduate of the institution, Uloko Laurenta Apaume, was reportedly shot dead by a member of the Auchi community vigilante group during a graduation party.
The late Laurenta, who graduated from the department of banking and finance was hit by a bullet fired by the vigilante who was said to have been invited to provide security for students.
The students as usual were said to have invited vigilantes to the venue to ensure protection against trouble makers at the venue.
An eye witness told Leadership Sunday that during the celebration, the vigilante had attempted to fire rounds of bullets into the air but the gun failed fired.
” The vigilante was lowering the gun to know why it failed to release bullet after pulling the trigger and in the process the bullet discharge itself and accidentally killed the girl who was celebrating on the spot,” he said.
According to him, the development cause panic as the celebrating students scampered for safety, saying that the suspects has been arrested by the police.
The State Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo ,who confirmed the incident, said it was clearly a misadventure and not intentional killing.
He said the female student of Auchi having written her final exam, as is the traditional, was celebrating that she was done with school when the incident occurred.
