The coalition comprising several world powers and international organisations said in a
meeting in Abuja on Wednesday that more international cooperation is needed to track the funds and arms of the Boko Haram.
According to reports the commitment of the coalition came on the heels of renewed appeals from the Nigerian government for an international support to contain terrorism in its territory.
At the peak of Boko Haram terrorist activities some members of the international community pledged assistance to Nigeria in combating the trend. Series of summits were held to work out modalities for a global partnership against terror in Africa’s most populous nation. First was the Paris conference on May 17 2014, it was followed up by a summit in London on June 12 while the recently concluded U.S.-Africa summit also dwelt on the same issue. In meeting a to follow up and review the level of implementation of commitment made by some of the world powers held in Abuja on Wednesday.
At the meeting, Nigeria called for more international support in tracking and stopping sources of funds and arms tfor the Boko Haram terrorist organization.
After assessing the latest security situation in Nigeria, the representatives of France, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, China and some of Nigeria’s neighbours that attended the meeting responded in the affirmative.
Amimu Wali, Nigeria’s minister of foreign Affairs said, “We need to underscore the need effectively address the sources of funding for and the supply of weapons to Boko Haram. It calls for greater cooperation of the international community to assist in tracking these sources in the view to cutting an end to these practices and all forms of illegal transfer of arms and ammunitions.”
The meeting also looked at other means of a more effective international support for anti-Boko Haram activities such as increased intelligent sharing and strengthening of the multinational taskforce on border security along Nigeria’s borders.
Amimu Wali also said, “The meeting therefore called for the redoubling of efforts on the parts of all concern given the critical importance of intelligent sharing in the fight against terrorism.”
The Abuja meeting also agreed to reconvene at a later date in Niger Republic to continue to review and evaluate the efforts of the international coalition against Boko Haram.
