The political cancer eating the soul of the Delta State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not responding to medication. The Elders Committee led by Senator Francis Spanner Okpozo is not willing to let go the party they believe rightly belongs to them ab initio.
They seek to question the validity of the Jones Ode Erue’s State Exco which they believe is illegal as declared by Delta State High Court which sat in Asaba. Justice Obi after hearing the matter based on evidence supplied by both parties held that the parties will have to go back to the drawing board to have another election to pick its state executives.
Erue and his political associates filed a stay of execution of the Justice Obi’s ruling and appealed the judgement now pending at the Court of Appeal in Benin City. The beat goes on and on but the latest trend of events is worrisome.
Okpozo and his group are sick and tired about the slow pace of event in the party at the state level and are going extra miles to ensure that the cabal dragging the progress of the party backward are exposed and dragged to the public court.
For this and some other reasons Okpozo and his political associates decided to walk in the way of jungle justice by deliberately disobeying lawful court orders which hitherto restrained parties from taking further actions including dissolution of the Erue’s Exco and the inauguration of a caretaker committee pending the final determination of the matter before the Appellate Court.
The law is no respecter of persons and disobedience to court orders attracts sanctions. However, the Erue’s group must be seen to provide credible leadership capable of handling internal crisis from time to time irrespective of individual or group political interests.
As a political family, decisions must not be too rigid while ensuring that the house is not divided to the point of public show of shame capable of attracting embarrassment to the party at both state and national levels.
Insider sources disclosed that the Okpozo camp were part of the 2015 general elections and supported the APC candidate, Olorogun Otega Emerhor but that the party is being managed by a few friends who have the same agenda to outdo other stakeholders who are not privy to certain political agenda.
They also accused the Erue’s Exco of buying time with the Appeal case so as to fully implement their well concealed agenda. Whatever the agenda is, the Okpozo group cannot and should not take laws into their hands.
From the above scenario it appears that the crack in Delta APC is widening and may spring unexpected surprises which is why something very urgent must be done to cure the political cancer that may slow down the growth of the party thereby narrowing her chances of winning the governorship elections in 2019.
It is strongly believed by political observers that the several chains of distractions in Delta APC are bankrolled by powerful “invisible hands” in the political power play in Delta State.
