\"Olu<\/a>Many may not know the Origin of the Itsekiri people, though the raw history is with the traditional rulers of that land, the very young of today will never know their history unless told by their elders. It is a well established fact that Oba Olua founded the Itsekiri kingdom for his unpopular son Iginua(1473- 1480A.D.) Historians said Iginua was hated by the Benins because of the bad advice he had given against the people as a result of this the Oba decided to create a kingdom for him by the sea and this Iginua accepted excitedly because he was aware of his unpopularity and this the Oba kept away from his chiefs, in order that they might not send their sons too with Iginua to sacrifice for him by the sea. Iginua was invested with the necessary regalia and with the title the Odihi n\u2019ame\u2019 but it became known generally to the Itsekiri\u2019s as the Olu of Itsekiri, after his father\u2019s name, Olua. It was Olua that was corrupted to become Olu. Oba Olua made a big box and filled it with the necessary royal attires and to conceal the secret, he put the sacrificial victims on top. He had given orders in advance to Ijaw men to take Iginua and their retinue in their canoes to their destination, hence Iginua became the first Olu or Odihi n\u2019 ame\u2019 and the founder of Itsekiri kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because he was fond of wearing fine clothes and he was very proud, he was nicknamed \u2018Iginua the proud\u2019. Benin and Itsekiri oral tradition agreed that Iginua was accompanied in his journey by sons of seventy Benin Chiefs. Iginua and his party initially settled at Amatu but relocated to Oruselemo, near the mouth of Focardos River, where he married an Ijaw wife and from here Iginua and his party moved to Ijalla, located at the Northern side of Warri River. Iginua died and he was buried there. Iginua had two sons, Ijejen and Iramen who succeeded him and they led the people to their final destination, Ode-Itsekiri, which is also known as the Big Warri.<\/p>\n

When Iginua descendants arrived at Ode-Itsekiri, the area was already settled by one Itsekiri, who was an Umale, who was supposedly to be a sub-human species inhabiting the area. the Umale already accepted the leadership of a new ruler which the people called Olu and therefore, the Umale gave the Olu land near his (Itsekiri\u2019s.)<\/p>\n

There are other versions that said the Itsekiri\u2019s kingdom was founded by the the yorubas but if this is true how come even with the difference in Itsekiri\u2019s linguistics from the main Edo streams, but they have all the traditional Edo traits. Same names as the Benin have for important titles, royal ritual ceremonies, religious worship and cultural affinities, This belongs to Benin, which they belong and derived their sovereign powers which gave them the kingdom of which, they remain very proud.<\/p>\n
