\"National<\/a>The House of Representatives has cautioned the
\nfederal government on its use of force in its
\nattempt to stop the attacks on oil facilities by the
\nNiger Delta Avengers (NDA) in the region.
\nIt advocated the formulation of a sustainable plan
\nto end militancy in the region, rather than the
\nconfrontational approach being adopted.
\nThe House also appealed to the (NDA), to cease the
\nincessant attacks on oil pipelines and facilities and
\nembrace dialogue.
\nHon. Ekpenyong Ayi (Cross River PDP) and 30
\nothers, in a motion, called for improved funding of
\nthe amnesty programme and a strategic plan to end
\nmilitancy on the region.
\nThe amnesty programme of late President Umaru
\nMusa Yar\u2019Adua was instrumental to the rise on oil
\nrevenues and curbing militant activities in the
\nregion, Ayi recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe incessant attacks on oil facilities have led to
\nNigeria losing its place as Africa\u2019s largest oil
\nproducer because it\u2019s oil output has fallen to a 22
\nyear low of 1.4 million barrels per day against the
\nbudgetary target of 2.2mbpd,\u201d he said.
\nAyi added that the huge slash in the budget for the
\namnesty programme from N55billion to N20billion
\nthreatens its sustainability.
\n\u201cThis has led to a resurgence of militancy, as the
\nmilitants are being owed arrears of stipends which
\nhave in turned to slump in oil production, \u201cthe
\nlawmaker said
\nThe attacks, he added, have contributed to the low
\nelectricity output.
\nMeanwhile an executive session by members of the
\nHouse of Representatives yesterday turned into a
\nstormy session as the lawmakers argued over the
\nchoice of vehicles to be purchased for their
\noversight functions.<\/p>\n

Some of the lawmakers favoured the Prado Land
\nCruiser Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) purchased for
\ntheir Senate counterparts, while others argued in
\nfavour of the Toyota Camry 2016 model. Others
\nexpressed preference for the Peugeot 508.
\nThe lawmakers espoused the advantages of their
\nchoices over the others. Those who canvassed for
\nthe Prado SUV pointed out its ability to smoothly
\nnavigate tough terrains, while the Camry advocates
\nargued for its understated elegance alongside its
\ndurability.
\nA lawmaker who spoke with THISDAY off record,
\ndisclosed that tells champions of the Peugeot 508
\nnoted that the manufacturer now assembles in
\nNigeria.
\n\u201cWe are talking about \u2018buy Naija\u2019,\u201d the lawmaker
\nsaid.
\nTHISDAY gathered that most of the first timers
\npreferred the Prado SUV, while old members
\nokayed the other two choices.
\n\u201cBut with the slash in our budget, it is surprising
\nthat some would still want us to buy Prado suit,\u201d
\nthe lawmaker added.
\nChairman of the Committee on Media and Public
\nAffairs, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, a few weeks ago
\nhad said the House would purchase 360 Peugeot
\n508 cars for each of its members for their oversight
\nfunctions.<\/p>\n
