Host communities to facilities of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) have given the company 72 hours to facilitate the release of five persons arrested by members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) last weekend in connection with pipeline bombings in Delta State.<\/p>\n

\"Militants\"<\/a>The communities said contrary to military reports in the media, the five alleged militants arrested by the JTF were actually contract workers of the American oil giant.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The arrested staff were said to be inspecting earlier bombed pipelines ahead of the visit of the Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) team which was billed to inspect the extent of damage when soldiers swooped on them.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The communities stated that the workers were with their identification cards and were ferried to the site in Chevron\u2019s boat when they were picked up.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
They added that the explanations given by the arrested persons that they were sent for inspection fell on deaf ears as they were arrested and whisked to the military base at Koko in Warri North Local Government Area where they have been in detention since last Saturday.<\/div>\n

The communities have therefore given Chevron 72 to effect the release of the said oil workers else they would withdraw all the surveillance workers, among other workers working for oil firms in the area as their safety were no longer guaranteed.<\/div>\n

They accused Chevron of paying lip service to the arrest of the five community workers.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The communities also expressed worries over the continued harassment and intimidation of community residents and oil workers.<\/div>\n

Chairman of Kokodiagbene, one of the communities, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, who spoke on behalf of the oil producing communities in the area, expressed dismay over the lukewarm attitude of the management of Chevron over the arrest of the five workers branded as members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).<\/div>\n

\u2018\u2019It is pertinent to state that we are no longer safe in the hands of security agents going by the constant harassment of our people.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We have handed a 72-hour ultimatum to Chevron to ensure the release of those arrested oil workers and if they fail to do this, we will withdraw all our services from all the oil companies including, Shell, Chevron, NPDC and Neconde.<\/div>\n

We are not Niger Delta Avengers. We are law-abiding citizens of Nigeria and those workers were doing their legitimate work when the JTF pounced on them and arrested them, thereafter proclaiming to the world that they have arrested Avengers.<\/div>\n

They should adopt more of intelligence in doing their work otherwise they would end up killing innocent people in the communities,” Mulade warned.<\/div>\n

It will be recalled that the communities had disclosed the names of the arrested workers, saying three of them were from Omadino, an Itsekiri village in Warri North, while the rest two are from Kokodiagbene, an Ijaw community and host to Utunana Flow Station in Gbaramatu kingdom.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
