Angola has reportedly declared Islam illegal and ordered for all of the country\u2019s mosques to be closed down.<\/p>\n

Minister of culture Rosa Cruz e Silva said that mosques in the largely Christian country would be closed until further notice.<\/p>\n

She described Islam as a \u2018sect\u2019 that would be banned as counter to Angolan customs and culture.<\/p>\n

There are unconfirmed reports that mosques across the African country are being destroyed, according to the International Business Times.<\/p>\n

President Jose Edurado dos Santos reportedly told the Osun Defence daily: \u2018This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country.\u2019<\/p>\n

Along with Islam, which is a religion associated with less than 1 per cent of the population of 19 million, 194 other \u2018sects\u2019 have been banned in the nation, where more than half the population is Christian.<\/p>\n

Ms Cruz e Silva said: \u2018The legalisation of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights [and] their mosques will be closed until further notice.\u2019
\nClashes between Christians and Muslim people are frequently reported in the local media.<\/p>\n

Manuel Fernando, director of the Angolan Ministry of Culture\u2019s National Institute for Religious Affairs, denied the reported measures.<\/p>\n

Less than 1 per cent of the Angolan population of 19 million people are Muslim\u2018There is no war in Angola against Islam or any other religion,\u2019 Fernando told Agence France-Presse. \u2018There is no official position that targets the destruction or closure of places of worship, whichever they are.\u2019<\/p>\n

\nThe crackdown on Islam comes as Christians in the Middle East are being forced out from Muslim countries. China is said to have also taken major steps to ban Islam from The Nation.<\/p>\n
