{"id":7369,"date":"2016-02-01T05:30:53","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T05:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=7369"},"modified":"2016-02-01T05:41:26","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T05:41:26","slug":"why-eating-fruit-and-veg-cuts-breast-cancer-risk-us-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=7369","title":{"rendered":"Why Eating fruit and veg cut breast cancer risk &#8211; US scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists in then US said the greatest apparent benefit came from fruit and vegetable fibre and was one simple lifestyle choice women can take to reduce breast cancer risk before the menopause.<\/p>\n<p>The study suggested eating more fibre-rich foods may lessen breast cancer risk partly by helping to reduce high oestrogen levels in the blood, which are strongly linked with breast cancer development.<\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and a fifth of those diagnosed with the disease are under 50.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, just under 50,000 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Maryam Farvid,visiting scientist and Takemi fellow at Harvard School of Public Health, said: \u201cPrevious studies of fibre intake and breast cancer have almost all been non-significant, and none of them examined diet during adolescence or early adulthood, a period when breast cancer risk factors appear to be particularly important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis work on the role of nutrition in early life and breast cancer incidence suggests one of the very few potentially modifiable risk factors for pre-menopausal breast cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GettyHarvard UniversityStudy: Research was carried out at Harvard University in the US<br \/>\nProfessor of of Epidemiology and Nutrition Dr Walter Willett added: \u201cFrom many other studies we know that breast tissue is particularly influenced by carcinogens and anticarcinogens during childhood and adolescence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have evidence that what we feed our children during this period of life is also an important factor in future cancer risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, analysed 90,534 women who participated in the Nurses\u2019 Health Study II, a large long-running investigation of factors that influence women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>The women aged 27 to 44 filled out questionnaires about their food intake in 1991 and then repeated the exercise every four years.<\/p>\n<p>They also completed a questionnaire in 1998 about their diet during high school.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers analysed the women\u2019s fibre intake while adjusting for a number of other factors, such as race, family history of breast cancer, body mass index, weight change over time, menstruation history, alcohol use, and other dietary factors.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/<a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fruits2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6533\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6533\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fruits2.jpg\" alt=\"fruits\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists in then US said the greatest apparent benefit came from fruit and vegetable fibre and was one simple lifestyle choice women can take to reduce breast cancer risk before the menopause.
