\"Tanzania<\/a>Newly elected Tanzanian President John Magufuli has
\nscrapped independence day celebrations to spend the
\nmoney on a clean-up campaign, an official statement
\nsaid.The president has instead decreed that on that day
\neverybody should pick up their tools and clean their
\nbackyards.
\n\u201cIt is so shameful that we are spending huge amounts of
\nmoney to celebrate 54 years of independence when our
\npeople are dying of cholera,\u201d Magufuli said in a statement
\nread on state television late Monday.<\/p>\n

Last weekend the Tanzanian parliament was going to open
\nand there was a state dinner planned for all guests that was
\ngoing to cost about 300million Shillings.President Magulufi
\ncut the budget to 25million Shillings and ordered that the
\nrest be taken to buy hospital beds for Muhimbili they got
\n300 beds and mattresses and 600 bed sheets from that
\nmoney.<\/p>\n

On Saturday 21st November 2015 a group of 50 people were
\nabout to set off for a tour of commonwealth countries but
\nPresident Magulufi cut that list down to 4 people, saving
\ngovernment 600m shillings in tickets, accommodation and
\nper diems.<\/p>\n

It is said when John Magufuli was confirmed winner of the
\npresidential election people started congratulating him and
\nsent gifts to his place which he turned back, saying he will
\nreceive all congratulations over the phone and nobody
\nshould visit him.
\nSome other austerity measures include:<\/p>\n

No more foreign travel, embassies will take care; if it\u2019s
\nnecessary to go, special permission must be sought from
\nhim or Chief Secretary
\nNo more 1st class and business class travel for all officials
\nexcept President, Vice, and Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

No more workshops and seminars in expensive hotels when
\ntheir so many ministry board rooms available.<\/p>\n

President Magulufi asked how come engineers are given V8s
\nwhen a pick-up is more suitable for their jobs.
\nNo more sitting allowances, how the hell are you paid
\nallowance for a job which you have a monthly salary; that
\nalso applies to MP\u2019s.<\/p>\n

All individuals\/firms that bought state companies that were
\nprivatized but haven\u2019t done anything (20years later) are to
\neither revive the industries immediately or hand them back
\nto the government
\nTanzania\u2019s say President Magulufi has literally pressed the
\nreset button; returning Tanzania to default factory settings
\nwhich was the Tanzania Julius Nyerere left.<\/p>\n

On the day after he was brought to power, as State House
\nofficials were showing him round he decided to take a walk
\nto ministry of finance, told government workers to get their
\nact together. He asked why some employees weren\u2019t in
\noffices and ordered the TRA to scrap all tax exemptions,
\neveryone must pay taxes especially the big guys
\nPresident Magulufi went to Muhimbili Hospital unannounced
\nand walked through the worst parts that they keep hiden from
\nimportant visitors and fired the director, the hospital board
\nand ordered that all machines that weren\u2019t working (so that
\npeople go to private hospitals owned by some doctors) to be
\nrepaired within 2 weeks otherwise he would fire even the
\nnew director.The machines were repaired in 3 days.<\/p>\n

Finally, last week when going to officially open parliament
\nPresident Magulufi didn\u2019t go by plane, drove the whole
\n600km from Dar to Dodoma.<\/p>\n

President Magulufi has reduced the size of the presidential
\nconvoy, even reduced the size of presidential delegation that
\ntravels with him.<\/p>\n

President Magulufi chose a Prime Minister most had never
\nheard of before, a man with a reputation for hard work and
\nno corruption.All the big guys Tanzanians expected would be
\nPM have been let wondering what hit them.<\/p>\n
