{"id":6595,"date":"2015-11-09T22:55:33","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T22:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=6595"},"modified":"2015-11-09T23:17:25","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T23:17:25","slug":"delta-born-jighere-wins-world-scrabble-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=6595","title":{"rendered":"Delta born Jighere Wins World Scrabble Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria recorded another milestone in the world of sports earlier today as a 36-year-old Nigerian scrabble player, Wellington Jighere, became the first Africab to win the World Scrabble Championship held in Perth, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Jighere defeated Lewis Mackay, 30, from Cambridge, England, in the final round of the competition after many heated rounds of competition to become the new world Scrabble champion.<\/p>\n<p>The Delta state born player won the final game with 448 points to Mackay\u2019s 426. Among the words used in the final were Gainlier, avouched and guiro.<\/p>\n<p>No fewer than 450 Scrabble players from around the world participated in the tournament that has seen its first African player crowned the champion.<br \/>\nThe current world number one, Nigel Richards of New Zealand, was placed eighth in the competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Delta-newsroom-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6437\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Delta-newsroom-logo.png\" alt=\"Delta newsroom logo\" width=\"270\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Speaking moments ago on his Facebook page about his historic victory, Jighere said: \u201cThanks all, for the prayers and the support. Just like our Oga, Sammy Okosagah, alluded to earlier on, it was a battle between one man and a whole continent. It was like I was borrowing the \u201cpickability\u201d of all the glorious pickers in the house.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll be releasing a more appropriate statement later. I really must endeavor to rest now. I\u2019ve not slept well in about a week. The fact that I was able to perform in spite of the sleeplessness still baffles me.
