{"id":6270,"date":"2015-09-26T21:09:57","date_gmt":"2015-09-26T21:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=6270"},"modified":"2015-09-26T21:09:57","modified_gmt":"2015-09-26T21:09:57","slug":"senator-says-more-than-90-of-nigerian-politicians-lie-in-their-asset-declarations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=6270","title":{"rendered":"Senator Says More Than 90% Of Nigerian Politicians Lie In Their Asset Declarations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 90 per cent of Nigerian politicians lie in their asset declarations, a former senator, who chaired the 2014 National Conference Convocation Committee, Femi Okunrounmu, has said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Okunrounmu stated this while speaking with journalists at the 80th birthday celebration of the leader of O\u2019dua Peoples Congress (OPC), Frederick Fasehun, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>News Agency of Nigeria reports that he said if anybody had done anything that was against the law or constitution, the person should be called to account.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, it is good and part of the fight against corruption, but that fight should be holistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should cover all the people who are guilty, not just target a few individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNinety per cent of politicians declare assets falsely, so the law should go after all the people that are guilty of such false declaration of assets, try them and bring them to justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey shouldn\u2019t just target one or two people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On the National Confab, Okunrounmu said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had always opposed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay be, the Constitution is favourable to some parts of the North; many northern APC leaders have always opposed a national confab.<br \/>\n\u201cMay be, one can understand why they oppose a confab, but those who know how the current Constitution came to being know that it was fashioned by successive military rulers, mostly from the north,\u201d he alleged.<\/p>\n<p>He said the southern wing of the APC, led by Ahmed Tinubu, had always agitated for a national conference, but were opposed to the 2014 confab \u201cfor political reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On the delay in cabinet formation by President Muhammadu Buhari, the former confab convocation committee chairman said there was no provision for the president to administer Nigeria without a cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though there is no specification on the number of days within which he must send the names of ministers, any governance without ministers is governance as sole administrator which is not provided for in the Constitution,\u201d he said.<a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/senate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6271\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/senate-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"senate\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/senate-300x151.jpg 300w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/senate.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 90 per cent of Nigerian politicians lie in their asset declarations, a former senator, who chaired the 2014 National Conference Convocation Committee, Femi Okunrounmu, has said.
