{"id":572,"date":"2014-08-21T16:53:32","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T16:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=572"},"modified":"2014-08-21T16:53:32","modified_gmt":"2014-08-21T16:53:32","slug":"thailand-coup-general-becomes-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=572","title":{"rendered":"Thailand coup General becomes Prime Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"print-page-link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/thailand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-573\" alt=\"thailand\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/thailand.jpg\" width=\"255\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"nrelate_flyout_placeholder\">\n<p>Thailand\u2019s junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha has been named the new prime minister of the southeast Asian nation.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Prayuth, 60, was nominated on Thursday in a legislature hand-picked by the junta and made up of mostly military and police figures.<\/p>\n<p>The general was the head of the army when he led a dramatic coup in May.<\/p>\n<p>It followed months of intense political deadlock between Yingluck Shinawatra\u2019s government and opposition parties that resulted in protests and clashes.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Prayuth was chosen after all 197 members of Thailand\u2019s National Assembly cast their votes on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u2019s Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the vote in Parliament was little more than a formality, lasting just 15 minutes, as Gen Prayuth was the only candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The Bangkok Post quoted Gen Prayuth as saying he was not approached before he was nominated.
