Ron Morais of Fredericton says he discovered a dead mouse in the bottom of his McDonald’s coffee cup on Monday. McDonald’s is still investigating the claim. (Catherine Harrop\/CBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ron Morais\u00a0of Fredericton says he got more than he bargained for when he picked up a cup of coffee from a local McDonald\u2019s restaurant on his way to work.<\/p>\n

He was contendedly\u00a0sipping his coffee that he got Monday from the Prospect Street location until he got to the bottom of the paper takeout cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always take the lid off to get my last sip of coffee. And when I took the lid off, there was a little bit of a surprise in my coffee cup. It was a dead mouse,\u201d Morais said.<\/p>\n

Morais said that wasn\u2019t all that was in the\u00a0cup. He said the mouse left \u201ca few little, shall we say, presents\u201d at the bottom of it.<\/p>\n

Morais\u00a0then showed a few of his co-workers what he had found.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless I had been there and seen Ron drink all that coffee down to the last drop, I would have been, like, ‘You’re lying,\u2019\u201d said one colleague, Brad Patterson.<\/p>\n

Jennifer LaHaye,\u00a0another co-worker who saw the mouse, recalls Morais\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Oh my God, there’s a mouse in my coffee,\u2019 is what he says. I turn around and look at him.\u00a0The first time I looked, I actually looked and it’s really, he’s not joking,\u201d LaHaye said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike is he OK\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and after that, I got green to the gills.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morais said the idea of drinking an entire cup of coffee with a mouse in it made him feel a little ill.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kind of had a little queasiness in my stomach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Jason Patuano, the communications manager for the eastern region for McDonald\u2019s Canada, issued a corporate statement that underscored how seriously the chain takes food safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take allegations involving cleanliness and sanitation very seriously,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon learning of this situation, the local franchisee immediately began an investigation, including working closely with the local public health authority who conducted an inspection this [Tuesday] morning following receiving a complaint.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDonald’s still investigating<\/h2>\n

A Department of Health restaurant inspection record on Tuesday said there was \u201cno evidence of pests,\u201d and all food items were sealed. The restaurant was not given any warnings in the report.<\/p>\n

McDonald’s Canada also said a pest control company\u00a0found no evidence of any rodent issues in the building.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are continuing to investigate this isolated incident and have reached out to the customer to obtain the product sample,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil such time as we are able to collect all the necessary facts and laboratory results to conclude a full review, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further. Similarly, we would also caution against jumping to conclusions until more details are available.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday afternoon, Morais said he had not yet heard from McDonald’s, but was looking forward to talking to the corporate officials.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to know how the mouse got in the cup of coffee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also wants an assurance this won’t happen to anyone else.<\/p>\n

Morais is remaining philosophical about the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, hey, you know. I’m here. And I’m in better shape than the mouse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
