{"id":25832,"date":"2021-05-19T06:59:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T06:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=25832"},"modified":"2021-05-19T07:07:40","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T07:07:40","slug":"new-whatsapp-messenger-policy-is-a-threat-to-your-privacy-fg-warns-nigerians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=25832","title":{"rendered":"New WhatsApp Messenger Policy is a Threat to Your Privacy, FG Warns Nigerians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=19271&amp;ad_type=81&amp;rl=1800\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>The<\/b><\/span><strong><span class=\"s1\"> Federal Government has warned Nigerians to be wary of the new WhatsApp messenger privacy policy to avoid unpalatable consequences as the initial promise of privacy and security is now being overridden on the bases of business exigency<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">WhatsApp shared a reviewed privacy policy on January 4,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>informing users outside the European Union that it would now share their information with Facebook and its sister companies following the acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Head, Corporate Affairs and External Relation, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Hadiza Umar, in a statement, yesterday, said in a bid to understand the issues and address the growing concerns of Nigerians, NITDA in collaboration with African Network of Data Protection Authorities, confronted global policy officials of Facebook Incorporated, owners of WhatsApp platform, about the new privacy policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Facebook team confirmed that private messages shared on WhatsApp consumer version are encrypted and not seen by the company. But the metadata (data about the usage of the service) which is also personal information is shared with other members of the Facebook Group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">She said as a result, Nigerians are advised to explore other available platforms with similar functionalities, but tighter privacy policies and security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey should\u00a0 limit the sharing of sensitive personal information on private messaging and social media platforms as the initial promise of privacy and security is now being overridden on the bases of business exigency.
