The strong-smelling plant resin is often used today as an incense, but recent research shows it could have a far more significant value.\u00a0In fact, a chemical compound in the resin could even trump chemotherapy in eliminating late-stage ovarian cancer cells.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the\u00a0latest research, scientists have demonstrated the ability of frankincense to combat cancer cells in late-stage ovarian cancer. The findings offer yet another piece of evidence that the \u201ccure\u201d for cancer will not be found in toxic conventional treatments, but rather in the natural world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frankincense is extracted from the Boswellia sacra tree and is found in Africa and Arabia. It\u2019s been used for centuries as a folk medicine, largely because of its anti-inflammatory properties. The compound known as AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) is credited with many of the known benefits of the resin, including its positive effects on cancer elimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a year of studying the AKBA compound with ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro, we have been able to show it is effective at killing the cancer cells,\u201d explained\u00a0Kamla Al-Salmani,\u00a0PhD, lead researcher. \u201cFrankincense is taken by many people with no known side effects. This finding has enormous potential to be taken to a clinical trial in the future and developed into an additional treatment for ovarian cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most impressive, the AKBA was even able to have an impact on cancer cells that were otherwise resistant to conventional treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has been most surprising is that the cells we have tested which are resistant to chemotherapy have shown to be more sensitive to this compound, suggesting frankincense may indeed be able to help overcome drug resistance, and lead to an improved survival rate for patients with late-stage ovarian cancer,\u201d Dr Mark Evans, Kamla\u2019s PhD Supervisor and Lecturer in the University\u2019s Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine said.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t the first study to suggest frankincense as a cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Four years ago, the\u00a0BBC reported\u00a0from Salalah, where immunologist Mahmoud Suhail is working on the cancer-fighting properties of the ancient resin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer starts when the DNA code within the cell\u2019s nucleus becomes corrupted,\u201d he says. \u201cIt seems frankincense has a re-set function. It can tell the cell what the right DNA code should be.<\/p>\n<p>Frankincense separates the \u2018brain\u2019 of the cancerous cell \u2013 the nucleus \u2013 from the \u2018body\u2019 \u2013 the cytoplasm, and closes down the nucleus to stop it reproducing corrupted DNA codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Historically, frankincense has been used for relief from asthma, gastroenteritis, skin conditions, and more.
