I was\u2014and still am\u2014bothered for at least four reasons.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">One, I criticized similar such parochial appointments by previous presidents from the South. It would be hypocritical to look the other way because I&#8217;m now \u201cfavored\u201d by such appointments. (Yes, I have more friends and acquaintances in powerful positions in this government than I\u2019ve ever had since 1999). Two, Buhari came to power on the promise of \u201cchange,\u201d on the promise of doing things differently. Three, people from my region and religion won\u2019t always be in power. I want to be able to stand on a firm moral pedestal when I criticize future presidents who replicate Buhari\u2019s (and previous presidents\u2019) provincialism.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Four, and most important, I am personally embarrassed by Buhari\u2019s insularity\u2014and every progressive northerner should be. It\u2019s the sort of embarrassment you feel when your best friend who thinks highly of your mother visits you in your home and your mother, during a family dinner, gives you a considerably bigger food portion size and choicer pieces of meat than your friend. You feel like screaming: \u201cMom, I know you love me, but you\u2019re embarrassing me by showing overt preferential treatment to me in the presence of my friend.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">That\u2019s precisely how the appointment of yet another northern Muslim Inspector General of Police has made me feel.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<p><code><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=17688&amp;ad_type=81&amp;rl=180\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Can\u2019t Buhari even pretend for a moment and pleasantly disappoint his critics by appointing someone from the South as IGP?<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">A northern Muslim DSS boss was fired by VP Osinbajo and the most senior office after him, who turned out to be a southern Christian, was asked to replace him. Instead of confirming his appointment, Buhari, upon his return from London, brought another old northern Muslim from retirement (yes, he was tired, retired, and enjoying the reticence of retirement) and made him the DSS boss without ever interviewing him for the job!<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Buhari\u2019s self-defense for his provincial appointments is that he needs to appoint only people he can trust. If after working for more than two decades in the Nigerian military, far and away Nigeria\u2019s most ecumenical institution, he can\u2019t trust anyone outside his cultural, regional, and religious comfort zone, HE IS the problem, not the people he distrusts.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">By the way, why does he hanker after the votes of people he doesn\u2019t and can\u2019t trust but whines about getting \u201conly 5 percent\u201d from them when they don\u2019t vote for him?<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">That\u2019s unreasonable.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">You don&#8217;t trust a people to appoint them to &#8220;sensitive positions&#8221;?<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Then don&#8217;t ask for their votes&#8211;and don&#8217;t whine when they don&#8217;t vote for you.<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.newsroom247.com.ng --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In August 2015, when I first publicly voiced out my disapproval of what I called the embarrassingly undisguised Arewacentricity of Buhari\u2019s appointments, a few people, mostly southerners, asked why I was bothered since I&#8217;m a northern Muslim who is \u201cfavored\u201d by such appointments\u2014\u201cfavored,\u201d that is, on the emotional and symbolic plane.
