{"id":21001,"date":"2018-12-14T19:33:27","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T19:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=21001"},"modified":"2018-12-14T19:33:27","modified_gmt":"2018-12-14T19:33:27","slug":"engaging-in-activities-regularly-can-reduce-depression-in-old-age-ucl-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=21001","title":{"rendered":"Engaging in &#8220;Activities&#8221; Regularly Can Reduce Depression in Old Age &#8211; UCL Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.newsroom247.com.ng --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p>Engaging in socio-cultural activities could \u201cdramatically\u201d reduce the chances of becoming depressed in old age, a new study has found.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, was carried out by researchers at the University College London.<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, people who went out to watch movies at the cinema, saw plays at the theatre, or visited museums for exhibitions every few months had a 32 percent lower risk of developing depression.<\/p>\n<p>Those engaging in these social activities once a month or more were said to have a 48 percent lower risk of developing depression.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers reviewed data of more than 2,000 people over the age of 50, who took part in the long-running English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA).<\/p>\n<p><code><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=17497&amp;ad_type=64&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p>ELSA provides information covering the health, social, wellbeing and economic circumstances of older people in England.<\/p>\n<p>Based on questionnaires and interviews that spanned a 10-year period, the researchers were able to identify a \u201cclear link between the frequency of \u2018cultural engagement\u2019 and the chances of someone over 50 developing depression\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They concluded that for maximum benefit, the cultural activities suggested by the study should be combined with \u201csocial interaction, creativity, mental stimulation and gentle physical activity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the findings, Daisy Fancourt, lead author of the study, said: \u201cFor it (cultural engagement) to have long-term benefits for mental health, we need to engage in activities regularly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepression is a major issue affecting millions of people.
