In all our States, we are concerned about the deteriorating economic situation experienced by the vulnerable segment of our population,\u201d Yari said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn agreeing to a National Minimum Wage however, the Forum is even more concerned about development, particularly in the health, education and infrastructure spheres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is therefore our considered position that since the percentage of salaried workers is not more than 5 percent of the total working population, our position must not just reflect a figure, but also a sustainable strategy based on ability and capacity to pay, as well as reflective of all our developmental needs in each state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfterall, Section 3 of the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission Act provides that \u2018the Commission shall recommend a proposition of income growth which should be initiated for wage increase and also examined the salary structure in public and private sector with reasonable features of relativity and maximum levels which are in consonance with the national economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in this sense that we feel strongly that our acceptable minimum wage must be done in such a way that total personnel cost does not exceed 50 percent of the revenue available to each State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernors therefore agreed to pay a national minimum wage of N22,500.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organised labour had demanded an upward raise of the minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000, an amount the federal government said was not feasible.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government, had instead, proposed 24,000. The state governments had earlier suggested N20,000 but labour rejected both proposals.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the meeting the federal government conveyed to discuss new minimum wage ended on an inconclusive note.<\/p>\n<p>Labour has threatened to declare a nationwide strike if government fails to meet its demand.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier before coming up with their decision, members of the organised labour, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC), had, on Tuesday staged a protest to mobilise support for their demand for a new national minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>The workers also supported by other civil society allies including Joint Action Forum (JAF) converged at Ojuelegba in Surulere, Lagos, as early as 7:30 am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>They took a long walk from Ojuelegba to the Gani Fawehinmi Park at Ojota where their leaders \u2013 Mr Joe Ajaero, president of ULC,\u00a0Amechi Asugwuni, NLC Deputy President and Abiodun Aremu of JAF addressed them.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering was under the close watch of officers and men of the Nigeria\u00a0Police Force.<\/p>\n<p>While addressing a crowd in Ojota, Asugwuni advised Nigerians to stockpile food in their homes ahead of the nationwide strike to begin Nov. 6.<\/p>\n<p><code><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=17096&amp;ad_type=64&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p>According to him, the struggle is to defend Nigerians and the walk day would help sensitise Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause once we commence the strike, there is no going back except the government agrees to our terms and conditions. The minimum wage is a legitimate right for Nigerian workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ajaero also said \u201cWe are on the road to tell the government that enough is enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nov. 6 will be the mother of all strikes in Nigeria.
