Help us demonstrate against the Federal Government and we will all be happy.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"6a46c-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6a46c-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6a46c-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"37d2u-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"37d2u-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"37d2u-0-0\">&#8220;This is because we have no control over the sources of soot. Do I go to shutdown the Refinery? Will they not say that it is economic sabotage?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"57ri5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"57ri5-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"57ri5-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"4j18v-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4j18v-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4j18v-0-0\">&#8220;Do I even have the security? Do I control the Police or the Army to go and stop oil production at the refinery?&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"erikm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"erikm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"erikm-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"8sjrd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8sjrd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8sjrd-0-0\">Governor Wike added that the State Government cannot stop the Nigerian Navy from destroying illegal refineries in ways that release dangerous substances to pollute the environment. He said all entreaties have fallen on deaf ears.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"defgh-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"defgh-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"defgh-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"9grlh-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9grlh-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9grlh-0-0\">He said nobody is happy about the presence of soot in the state as its effect is non discriminatory.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"5rtqa-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5rtqa-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5rtqa-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"3g42m-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3g42m-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3g42m-0-0\">The governor said it is necessary to properly situate those with the responsibility of stopping the soot, rather than protesting for the sake of creating social tension.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"d40t0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"d40t0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d40t0-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"d9ldl-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"d9ldl-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d9ldl-0-0\">He assured the people of Rivers State that the administration will continue to prevail on the security agencies and regulatory institutions to take the right step to stop the soot<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=15983&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div data-offset-key=\"frkm8-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"frkm8-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"frkm8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"frkm8-0-0\">MEANWHILE, the Federal Government said the soot, currently being experienced in Port Harcourt and its environs, was caused by activities of illegal oil refiners, bunkers and burning of tyres.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"9me8e-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9me8e-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9me8e-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"9ukkb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9ukkb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9ukkb-0-0\">Mr Peter Idabor, Director General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) disclosed this at the beginning of a Joint Activation and Drill Exercise in Port Harcourt, on Tuesday.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"5ibqf-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5ibqf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ibqf-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"8ns58-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8ns58-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8ns58-0-0\">He further attributed the development to activities in abattoirs and kpo-fire (a slang used to describe illegal oil bunkering business) operators who carry out their illicit activities at night.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"ednqn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ednqn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ednqn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"1jnu3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1jnu3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1jnu3-0-0\">\u201cIn Port Harcourt, there are over 100 abattoirs and many of these abattoirs use rubber tyres to roast animals while others burn them to extract copper wires.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"3uov3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3uov3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3uov3-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"d7mh4-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"d7mh4-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d7mh4-0-0\">\u201cAnother source of the soot is the heating of asphalt (used for roads) and burning of stolen petroleum products by security agencies.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"rpg4-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"rpg4-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"rpg4-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"d9e39-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"d9e39-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d9e39-0-0\">Idabor said the Ministry of Environment and its affiliated bodies had already held several meetings with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to end the soot.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"a5ul8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"a5ul8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"a5ul8-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"dno20-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dno20-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dno20-0-0\">\u201cWe have agreed that instead of setting ablaze tankers caught with stolen petroleum product; that it is better to retire the crude oil back to the refineries and oil companies.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"c3it-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"c3it-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c3it-0-0\">\u201cWe felt that rather than dispose the petroleum products into the environment that it is best to store them in refineries\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"32u2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"32u2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"32u2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"460rb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"460rb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"460rb-0-0\">Idabor said a committee, set up on the orders of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, had adopted the Harmonised Standard Operating Procedure to deal with recovered stolen petroleum products.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"fheha-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fheha-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fheha-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"9o8p3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9o8p3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9o8p3-0-0\">He said that soot particle was 2.5 micron in size that could only be seen through high-powered microscopic lens.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"8uk8r-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8uk8r-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8uk8r-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"fhkb7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fhkb7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fhkb7-0-0\">He said that the particles could not be prevented from entering homes and offices.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"12j41\" data-offset-key=\"9bag1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9bag1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9bag1-0-0\">\u201cThe soot particle is then inhaled and after sometimes becomes an irritant and the individual starts coughing.
