He called her and said, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"cjcbs-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cjcbs-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cjcbs-0-0\">\u201cMummy, do you know you are burning people\u2019s money?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"cgtnu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cgtnu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cgtnu-0-0\">She was shocked. The boy warned, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"67cmf-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"67cmf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"67cmf-0-0\">\u2018Mummy, these people will not like you and they can go to any extent to fight back. I don\u2019t like this your job, Mummy.\u2019<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"f79p1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"f79p1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f79p1-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"9s32v-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9s32v-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9s32v-0-0\">I told him not to worry. I gave him Psalm 127 to read and meditate on. &#8220;Except the Lord builds a house, the labourers labour in vain\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"3v5ed-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3v5ed-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3v5ed-0-0\">Dora Akunyili&#8217;s was too determined to stop fake drug in Nigeria and not even genuine concern from her biological child could discourage her from stopping those selling chalk in place of antibiotics, powder in place of antimalarial drugs or unsterilized water in place of adrenaline. Dora got her courage boosted whenever she remembered her own sister, Vivian, also died after taking fake drug.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"2ltao-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2ltao-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2ltao-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"525qv-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"525qv-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"525qv-0-0\">So as the Director General of Nigeria&#8217;s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Dora Akunyili started to set ablaze fake drugs worth million dollars monthly.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"e5nv2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"e5nv2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"e5nv2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"60v52-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"60v52-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"60v52-0-0\">On the 26 December 2003, a bullet from drug counterfeiters shattered the rear windscreen of her vehicle pierced her headscarf, burnt her scarf like hot water and gone through the front screen. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"2124e-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2124e-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2124e-0-0\">&#8220;Within a split second, there was a painful bang on my head, which made my scalp hurt badly.&#8221; She recalled. It was a really close shave with death!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"pj2i-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"pj2i-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"pj2i-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"b3oaj-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"b3oaj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b3oaj-0-0\">\u201cThousands of Nigerians die from fake drugs every year. Is my life worth more than their lives? I will keep on fighting&#8221; she declared.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=15973&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"acspb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"acspb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"acspb-0-0\">Drug counterfeiters dared not bribe her because her honesty and patriotism were legendary. When she was the Zonal Secretary (South-east) of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF), she had cause to go abroad for medical attention. The bill was $17,000, including $12,000 for surgery. But after pre-surgery check-up, it was discovered that she didn\u2019t need any surgery again. She promptly requested that the $12,000 be refunded to PTF. The doctor was shocked. He was used to seeing Nigerians coming around with fictitious ailments.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"6j8id-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6j8id-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6j8id-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"2lgvu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2lgvu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2lgvu-0-0\">When she got back to Nigeria, the (then) chairman of PTF, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, wrote her a letter of commendation. When Obasanjo wanted to appoint a DG for NAFDAC in 2001, somebody who knew this story told President Obasanjo about Dora Akunyili. The President asked for her phone number and called her, but when she answered the call and the caller introduced himself as President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dora Akunyili dismissed the call as handiwork of fraudster because she never in her widest imagination thought President Obasanjo could have her number or call her. Dora Akunyili was interviewed and appointed as DG of NAFDAC by &#8220;presidential call.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"dv458-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dv458-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dv458-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"b5ju-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"b5ju-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b5ju-0-0\">This patriotic lady sent drug counterfeiters out of Nigeria saving millions Nigerians from &#8220;medical mass murder&#8221;.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"lo55-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"lo55-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"lo55-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"982bg-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"982bg-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"982bg-0-0\">She took on big companies like Cadbury, Nestle and Park n\u2019 Shop in the process of enforcing regulations.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"en88q-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"en88q-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"en88q-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"83dhk-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"83dhk-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"83dhk-0-0\">Akunyili died in India on June 7, 2014 after a long battle with cancer.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"3jund-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3jund-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3jund-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3l0s5\" data-offset-key=\"dq3qr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dq3qr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dq3qr-0-0\">Please let&#8217;s celebrate another hero who put her life and her family&#8217;s safety on the line for the good of her country.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"dq3qr-0-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/DORA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18285\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/DORA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/DORA.jpg 454w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/DORA-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof Dora Akunyili&#8217;s 14-year-old son came home from school on vacation.
