{"id":18272,"date":"2018-04-16T12:55:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T12:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=18272"},"modified":"2018-04-16T12:55:39","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T12:55:39","slug":"the-sudden-death-phenomenon-by-hope-eghagha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=18272","title":{"rendered":"THE SUDDEN DEATH PHENOMENON By Hope Eghagha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"2ap00-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2ap00-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2ap00-0-0\">The first time the sudden death experience hit close to me was when my only younger biological sister Racheal jumped into the night of her life without notice.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"29ce2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"29ce2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"29ce2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"ch8pt-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ch8pt-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ch8pt-0-0\">Rachael was a 39 year old boisterous and active artiste\/Arts reporter in Lagos; she dropped dead suddenly after alighting from a taxi somewhere in Surulere late in 2004, about November.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"7c242-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"7c242-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7c242-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"anlbl-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"anlbl-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"anlbl-0-0\">It happened on a Monday evening after the day\u2019s work, after she had been paid for some job which had done, after she had just moved into her own apartment and ready to start life on her own.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"7e9qn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"7e9qn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7e9qn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"24mud-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"24mud-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"24mud-0-0\">As everyone headed home at close of work, she went into the last home of humanity.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"5oae8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5oae8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5oae8-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"6bi4u-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6bi4u-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6bi4u-0-0\">The Saturday of the previous week she had phone-called me to lament the death of Jaiye Aboderin who had slumped on the basketball court that weekend after a dunk; she was supposed to interview Jaiye for her magazine after I linked them up.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"b04qn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"b04qn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b04qn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"b4lbd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"b4lbd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b4lbd-0-0\">Little did she know that her own exit was around the corner!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"cnumf-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cnumf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cnumf-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"fkpl6-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fkpl6-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fkpl6-0-0\">It was a rude shock to me, to the entire family, and the Arts community in Lagos. But it made me more conscious of how vulnerable we are as human beings to the call of death.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"107ji-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"107ji-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"107ji-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"34m78-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"34m78-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"34m78-0-0\">While we got ready for her funeral I got to know of more sudden deaths stories across the land. The late Elder Segun Olusola was a senior friend of Rachael\u2019s.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"a69vn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"a69vn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"a69vn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"dceh5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dceh5-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dceh5-0-0\">He called to tender his apologies about his inability to attend the funeral and said he was going to attend the funeral of a Permanent Secretary who had died at his desk in the office.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"2m46i-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2m46i-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2m46i-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"2tuet-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2tuet-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2tuet-0-0\">I also got to know about a cab driver whose passenger died in the back seat while in transit from Ikeja to Victoria Island. When they arrived at their destination he wouldn\u2019t wake up. The cab driver was in trouble!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"5flj5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5flj5-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5flj5-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"dj9f9-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dj9f9-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dj9f9-0-0\">In recent times too many people have dropped dead, with no obvious sign of ill-health. A couple of young people have died while exercising; others have died while descending the staircase.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"3f2af-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3f2af-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3f2af-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"8d1ki-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8d1ki-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8d1ki-0-0\">The most dramatic of sudden deaths happened to a former schoolmate somewhere in Bayelsa State.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"88igr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"88igr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"88igr-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"dabfd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dabfd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dabfd-0-0\">A man in his early fifties, I guess, he had just been made a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The week after his thanksgiving he slumped one morning when he entered his car ready to drive off to work.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"db8hu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"db8hu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"db8hu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"49d61-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"49d61-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"49d61-0-0\">He died a week later in the hospital. Last September a healthy-looking 55 year-old man slumped at his place of work on the island in Lagos.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"armg7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"armg7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"armg7-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"ablk7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ablk7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ablk7-0-0\">He was rushed to a highbrow hospital and died about five days later, a victim of a massive heart attack.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"8lpcc-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8lpcc-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8lpcc-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"526a2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"526a2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"526a2-0-0\">His wife, (good wives always know when a man is over working himself) had advised him to go to hospital and check his cholesterol level because he always sweated profusely at night. He refused.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"6fn9m-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6fn9m-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6fn9m-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"6kklq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6kklq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kklq-0-0\">The list is long. I am sure some of us reading this would have one story or another to tell. Why are sudden deaths on the increase? Why are men and women in the thirties or forties victims of sudden death?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"70rbt-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"70rbt-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"70rbt-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"2bfs1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2bfs1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2bfs1-0-0\">I am not a medical doctor; so I am not in a position to proffer scientific reasons why these deaths have been on the increase. I can only guess. I know that stress level is very high right now in Nigeria. Money to pay the house rent. Money to pay school fees.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"fpj3c-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fpj3c-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fpj3c-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"4arfp-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4arfp-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4arfp-0-0\">Money to maintain the car. Money to feed the family. There is the problem of traffic congestion.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"8aqav-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8aqav-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8aqav-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"9716e-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9716e-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9716e-0-0\">Family pressure and social demands are also there. Too many friends and family need help. Pressure to help the kids get employment, settle down and get married. I have been forced to read up literature on the subject. Indeed, Mr. Sudden Death is very much here.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"c7lnn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"c7lnn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c7lnn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"5lsrt-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5lsrt-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5lsrt-0-0\">Life style, heart diseases, uncontrolled hypertension, high levels of bad cholesterol and severe stress conditions are said to be some of the causes.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"8dghe-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8dghe-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8dghe-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"6n608-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6n608-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6n608-0-0\">Sadly, when it happens we begin to look for \u2018remote\u2019 or \u2018spiritual causes.\u2019 That is when some catch the witch in the office or in the family or where they live. Ignorance is indeed a disease.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"cnnob-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cnnob-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cnnob-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"4bnln-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4bnln-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4bnln-0-0\">Our lives have become so sedentary that we do not exercise the body enough. We sit down for hours on end tasking the brain and stressing the body.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"fumpd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fumpd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fumpd-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"nbj2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"nbj2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"nbj2-0-0\">Some people sit down from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. in front of the computer, anxiously watching the screen and reading reports which could make the heart fail.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"clmat-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"clmat-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"clmat-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"2oui0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2oui0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2oui0-0-0\">We move from the computer to the smartphone reading news reports or looking at pictures that do not help the heart.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"1erb6-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1erb6-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1erb6-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"8vgs0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8vgs0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8vgs0-0-0\">Breathing behind us the determination to succeed or to out-do our rivals. Office and social pressures are also there. Sometimes we go to bed but the mind does not sleep. We wake up tired and set out again for the day\u2019s uncertainties.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"91lm3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"91lm3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"91lm3-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=15972&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"e4936-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"e4936-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"e4936-0-0\">On the flip side, when you stay by a dying friend, family member or colleague, you sometimes wish that sudden death would be better.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"d698n-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"d698n-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d698n-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"ejo2t-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ejo2t-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ejo2t-0-0\">A man who stays sick for three to five years, suffering, going in and coming out of hospital and dies in the end would make one wish that death had come earlier.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"5s0h2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5s0h2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5s0h2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"9d0mj-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9d0mj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9d0mj-0-0\">The terrible terminal diseases are the greatest culprits in this. I remember once telling two elderly citizens that going out suddenly was best for anyone.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"56hem-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"56hem-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"56hem-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"f1vd8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"f1vd8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f1vd8-0-0\">That it prevented undue suffering, unnecessary hospital costs and trauma. The two old men were quiet for a while in the car.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"4f4ar-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4f4ar-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4f4ar-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4gqt7\" data-offset-key=\"9gnte-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9gnte-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9gnte-0-0\">The silence ended.
