{"id":16357,"date":"2017-10-13T21:18:40","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T21:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=16357"},"modified":"2017-10-13T21:18:40","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T21:18:40","slug":"bonga-oil-spill-again-group-drags-shell-to-london-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=16357","title":{"rendered":"BONGA OIL SPILL: AGAIN GROUP DRAGS SHELL TO LONDON COURT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">A Non-Governmental Organisation has filed a suit in a London court against Shell Nigeria Exploration &amp; Production Company, SNEPCO, over a 2011 oil spill in Nigeria\u2019s Niger Delta region.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The NGO, the Oil Spills Victims Vanguard, filed the case on September 21 at the TTC High Court of Justice, London, on behalf of the victims of the Bonga oil spill.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The spill, said to have been caused by an operational error on the part of SNEPCO, had about 40,000 barrels of crude oil discharged into the Atlantic Ocean, and affected at least 350 communities in Delta and Bayelsa states.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe pollution from this discharge which covered a distance of 185 killometres along the Nigeria coastline compelled fishermen to desert the sea and the polluted farmlands,\u201d the group said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">About 168,000 people were said to have been affected directly by the spill.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Royal Dutch Shell PLC, which is a parent company to SNEPCO, is joined as a co-defendant in the case.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Harrison Jalla, the Executive Director of the Oil Spills Victims Vanguard, is the lead plaintiff in the case.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=14693&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Mr. Jalla, in a press statement, said SNEPCO has \u201ccompletely refused\u201d to pay the $5 billion fine imposed on it by the Nigerian government.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Mr. Jalla said his NGO wants to use the court case to compel Shell to pay compensation to the victims and the affected communities, as well as clean up the environment.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The NGO, represented by the law firm, Johnson and Steller, Mayfair, London, is asking for a preliminary court order that would compel Shell to tender reports and all other documents related to the\u00a0 oil spill.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">No date has been fixed yet for the hearing.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Shell could not reached immediately for its comment.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The oil company in the past denied any wrongdoing, claiming that it responded to the oil spill \u201cwith professionalism and acted with the consent of the necessary authorities at all times to prevent environmental impact as a result of the incident,\u201d according to a report published by Reuters.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Nigerian government was said to have filed a similar suit in 2016 against Shell at a federal high court, Abuja, demanding N1.3 trillion as compensation on behalf of the victims and communities affected by the Bonga oil spill.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/OIL-SPILL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-16358\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/OIL-SPILL-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/OIL-SPILL-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/OIL-SPILL.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Non-Governmental Organisation has filed a suit in a London court against Shell Nigeria Exploration &amp; Production Company, SNEPCO, over a 2011 oil spill in Nigeria\u2019s Niger Delta region.
