27<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of September, 2017, considered the impacts of fossil fuels on the continent and proposed alternatives for decentralised energy systems that are environmentally friendly and socially just.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Oilwatch Africa members also considered the implications of fossil fuels exploitation on primary economies including agriculture, fisheries and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The conference analysed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>a)The political and economic interests of the governments and multinational oil companies,<\/li>\n<li>b)Political corruption and abuse of political power,<\/li>\n<li>c)The rise of human and environmental rights abuses visited on our communities and peoples,<\/li>\n<li>d)Issues of land grabbing, displacements and the marginalisation of communities,<\/li>\n<li>e)Data paucity\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0on renewable energy resources,<\/li>\n<li>f)Abuse of the tools for socio-economic\/environmental assessments in interrogating proposed projects,<\/li>\n<li>g)Governments investment choices in energy systems are driven by industry and international financial institutions and do not reflect peoples\u2019 energy needs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Oilwatch Africa affirmed that \u201c<strong>leaving fossils fuels in the ground\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and replacing with \u201c<strong>renewable energy\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0is possible and an inescapable path to protecting our nations, tackling global warming and securing a future for new generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Leaving fossil fuels in the ground will be a powerful means of mitigating the impact of climate change, noting that this call is in consonance with science.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=14552&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Therefore, we make the following\u00a0demands:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>That governments should divest from fossil fuel and invest in renewable energy;<\/li>\n<li>The peoples\u2019 ownership and control of energy systems;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>That environmental and social externalities associated with fossil energy extraction be included in the true price of oil;<\/li>\n<li>Prioritisation of primary economies, such as of fisheries, over the enclave economies of the extractive sector \u2013 as a means of protecting the livelihoods and social security of the majority of our citizens;<\/li>\n<li>Stoppage of fossil exploration, funding and expansion activities in Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Issued this 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0day of September, 2017 in Accra, Ghana.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OILWATCH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-16089\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OILWATCH-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OILWATCH-300x201.jpg 300w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OILWATCH-272x182.jpg 272w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OILWATCH.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OILWATCH AFRICA \u00a0 Fossil Fuels and Alternative Energy for Africa The Accra Declaration Oilwatch Africa network members, community representatives from oil regions, academia, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs) and the media met in Accra, Ghana, between 24th\u00a0&#8211;
