Each procedure costs $8,000 (\u00a36,200) and sees the patient injected with two and a half litres of plasma \u2013 the liquid element of blood that remains after other cells have been removed &#8211; taken from young people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"92\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"93\">\n<p>The procedure is being offered as an experimental attempt at rejuvenating the elderly. The median age of the patients is 60 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"94\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"95\">\n<p>Jesse Karmazin, 32, a Stamford-trained scientist who founded the US clinic, told The Sunday Times that the initial results from his patients\u00a0had been encouraging.<\/p>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"96\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"97\">\n<p>\u201cIt could help improve things such as appearance or diabetes or heart function or memory. These are all the aspects of ageing that have a common cause.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"98\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"99\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not really in the camp of saying this will provide immortality but I think it comes pretty close, essentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"96\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"97\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=14162&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"108\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"109\">\n<p>The new treatment comes on the back of several studies over the last 17 years in which Stamford researchers have shown the joining of circulatory systems (known as parabiosis) between old and young mice to be effective in\u00a0rejuvenating organs, muscles and stem cells. Additionally, a study last year found that the plasma of young people itself had\u00a0a rejuvenating effect when injected into older mice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"110\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"111\">\n<p>However, despite the results of the mice-based studies, researchers have attacked the scientific validity of Karmazin\u2019s experiment and raised a number of ethical concerns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"112\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"113\">\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s just no clinical evidence [that the treatment will be beneficial],\u201d\u00a0argues Tony Wyss-Coray,\u00a0the Stamford neuroscientist behind a key 2014 mice parabiosis study. For one thing, Karmazin\u2019s trial does not use a placebo control group and participants can be as young as 35.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"114\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"115\">\n<p>Critics have also pointed to the dangers of unnecessarily exposing people to the potential risks of blood transfusions, which\u00a0include hives, lung injury and fatal infections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"116\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"117\">\n<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p>Others have argued that the treatment amounts to a scam exploiting the hype around the untested medical properties of young people\u2019s blood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"118\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"119\">\n<p>\u201cPeople want to believe that young blood restores youth, even though we don\u2019t have evidence that it works in humans and we don\u2019t understand the mechanism of how mice look younger,\u201d Wyss-Coray told\u00a0the MIT Technology Review.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"128\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"129\">\n<p>And then there\u2019s the murky ethics of buying blood that young people might have thought they were donating to those in medical need, and using it for expensive, experimental treatments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"130\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"131\">\n<p>While US plasma donation sites normally offer a stipend of $20-50 (\u00a316-39), they emphasise the life-saving treatments that donations can support, using patient testimonies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15611\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood.jpg 1056w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"132\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"133\">\n<p>And with a disproportionate number of America&#8217;s poorest people\u00a0regularly donating plasma to make ends meet, this paints a very different picture to the strange world of regenerative medicine,\u00a0where hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested by the super rich\u00a0in a bid to outsmart ageing, or even death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"134\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"135\">\n<p>Karmazin has responded to criticisms by saying\u00a0his study has passed ethical review. In response to criticism about the trial&#8217;s cost and methodology, he adds that it would be\u00a0unfair to give paying participants a placebo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"136\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"137\">\n<p>And, he argues, his patients are immediately\u00a0reaping the rewards of his treatment: \u201cWe\u2019re already seeing people look better after just one treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"138\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"139\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like plastic surgery from the inside out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LongArticle-bodyItem\" data-reactid=\"140\">\n<div class=\"Text gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\"141\">\n<p>Hmm.
