{"id":15318,"date":"2017-07-30T11:38:47","date_gmt":"2017-07-30T11:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=15318"},"modified":"2017-07-30T11:38:47","modified_gmt":"2017-07-30T11:38:47","slug":"senate-proposes-amendment-to-nddc-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=15318","title":{"rendered":"SENATE PROPOSES AMENDMENT TO NDDC ACT"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The Nigerian Senate is proposing an amendment to the law establishing the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to clarify who is qualified for appointment into the board of the commission.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Section 2 (1) b of the Act establishing the NDDC reads: \u201cThere is hereby established for the Commission a governing board which shall consist of (a) Chairman; (b) one person who shall be an indigene of an oil producing area to represent each of the following member states, that is, (i) Abia State, (ii) Akwa Ibom State, (iii) Bayelsa State, (iv) Cross River State, (v) Delta State, (vi) Edo State, (vii) Imo State (viii) Ondo State, and (ix) Rivers State.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">While presenting the proposal for the amendment in the Senate during plenary\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1677449140\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Thursday<\/span><\/span>, Peter Nwaboshi (PDP\/ Delta North), said that \u201cIt turned out that the interpretation of \u2018an indigene of an oil producing area\u2019 has been problematic.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201c\u2018An oil producing area\u2019 seems to be quite amorphous.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThis bill has taken care of the issue by clarifying the phrase to read thus: \u2018an indigene of an oil producing local government area\u2019,\u201d said Mr Nwaboshi, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Mr. Nwaboshi said the Senate mandated his committee to carry out a review of the Act when the senators noticed \u201ccertain ambiguities\u201d in the Act during the confirmation of President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s nominees for the NDDC board appointment in 2016.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=13881&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He said the committee consulted parties in the Niger Delta region and received their inputs for the amendment.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The senator also said that funding has been a major challenge facing the NDDC since it was established in 2000, adding that the fund meant for the commission are unduly delayed most times.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe commission is being owed the sum of over N1.8 trillion, while its debt profile is over N1 trillion.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWorst still, is the breach of the provision of the Act.
