{"id":153,"date":"2014-08-15T19:38:23","date_gmt":"2014-08-15T19:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=153"},"modified":"2014-08-15T19:38:23","modified_gmt":"2014-08-15T19:38:23","slug":"ebola-crisis-to-last-at-least-six-months-msf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=153","title":{"rendered":"Ebola crisis to last at least six months \u2013 MSF"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"nrelate_flyout_placeholder\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ebola1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-154\" alt=\"ebola\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ebola1.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa will take at least six months to bring under control, the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres says.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Geneva, MSF President Joanne Liu said the situation was \u201cdeteriorating faster, and moving faster, than we can respond to\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the World Health Organisation said the scale of the outbreak appeared to be \u201cvastly underestimated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It said that \u201cextraordinary measures\u201d were needed.<\/p>\n<p>The epidemic began in Guinea in February and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the death toll rose to 1,145 after WHO said 76 new deaths had been reported in the two days to 13 August. There have been 2,127 cases reported.<\/p>\n<p>Liu said that although Guinea was the initial epicentre, the pace there had slowed, and other countries \u2013 particularly Liberia \u2013 were now the focus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t stabilise Liberia, we will never stabilise the region,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of timeline, we\u2019re not talking in terms of weeks, we\u2019re talking in terms of months. We need a commitment for months, at least I would say six months, and I\u2019m being, I would say, very optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liu also called for more action from the international community and stronger leadership from WHO \u2013 the UN\u2019s health agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll governments must act. It must be done now if we want to contain this epidemic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWHO needs to take leadership and bring some strong elements into the field at all operational levels. It\u2019s already started but it needs to happen at all levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with the body fluids of a person who is infected.<\/p>\n<p>Initial flu-like symptoms can lead to external haemorrhaging from areas such as eyes and gums, and internal bleeding which can lead to organ failure.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO \u2013 which declared a global health emergency last week \u2013 recently said that the risk of transmission of Ebola during air travel remained low, as the disease is not airborne.<\/p>\n<p>As a consequence, Kenya Airways has rejected pressure to suspend its flights to the Ebola-hit states of West Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa will take at least six months to bring under control, the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres says.
