{"id":14607,"date":"2017-06-02T19:34:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-02T19:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=14607"},"modified":"2017-06-03T18:57:26","modified_gmt":"2017-06-03T18:57:26","slug":"unep-civil-society-call-calls-for-immediate-clean-up-of-ogoniland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=14607","title":{"rendered":"UNEP: CIVIL SOCIETIES CALL FOR IMMEDIATE CLEAN-UP OF OGONILAND"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Environmental Rights Action, Amnesty International, and Friends of the Earth Europe have called for the immediate clean-up of Ogoniland in Nigeria, as it was stated should happen by a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">One year on from when\u00a0the implementation of UNEPs report on Ogoniland was officially supposed to begin, the communities of the Niger Delta are still waiting for clean-up to start. Since the current President, Muhammadu Buhari\u00a0was elected the governing structures for the UNEP implementation have been put in place and a coordinator was appointed to lead HYPREP, the implementation agency. <span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">But six years after publication of the UNEP Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland very little has happened to improve the situation:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0communities in Ogoniland are still waiting for clean-up and still waiting for the clean air, water, and land they need.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">only 1% of the promised funds have been made available: a reported $10m of the required $1billion budget has been transferred.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Some communities where UNEP found contaminated drinking water wells have never received any alternative source of drinking water<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0Shell continues to use the discredited RENA\u00a0<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-GB\">clean-up process, despite UNEP\u2019s clear recommendation that the process was ineffective and should be discontinued.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0The company also says it has revisited 15 oil spill sites identified by UNEP, and carried out further remediation at 6 of those sites. But this is misleading because UNEP found contamination at more than 50 Shell locations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Meanwhile an Amnesty International investigation found that heavy contamination remained at 4 oil spill sites identified by UNEP, despite the fact remediation work had been carried out by Shell. <i>\u00a0[<\/i>Link to AI investigation]<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=13352&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u2018Six years after the UNEP report the communities of Ogoniland are still unacceptably waiting for action to clean up their land and water. Justice cannot be endlessly delayed, the Nigerian government needs to urgently ensure the plan is implemented immediately,\u2019<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> said Godwin Ojo, Environmental Rights Action\/Friends of the Earth Nigeria.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Meanwhile the oil industry continues discredited practices and fails to ensure Ogoniland is free of pollution.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">It\u2019s clear that Shell is using the Government clean-up process as an excuse for not properly cleaning-up past pollution. It\u2019s responsibility is clear \u2013 it stop and clean-up it\u2019s pollution now\u2019 said\u00a0 the Amnesty International<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The UNEP report called for the implementation of emergency measures, the establishment of a $1 billion start up fund and extensive clean-up of Ogoniland.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<i><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u2018\u2019It\u2019s overdue that the start-up fund is immediately fully funded and the clean-up operation fully staffed.
