It is the leading cause of mortality nationwide, accounting for one in every four deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"153\" data-total-count=\"318\">A new analysis, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shows that a substantial portion of these deaths could be prevented by healthier eating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"204\" data-total-count=\"522\">In 2015, more than 400,000 deaths from cardiovascular causes were linked to unhealthy diets, according to the research, presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association last week in Portland, Ore.<\/p>\n<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"243\" data-total-count=\"765\">The biggest factors were a deficit of nuts and seeds, vegetables, whole grains and fruits, and an excess of salt. Men\u2019s higher consumption of sodium is one driver of this difference, Dr. Afshin said.
