(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>VITALIS UGOH,Calabar:<br \/>\nThe Presidential Committee on Constitution and Electoral Reforms has<br \/>\ncalled on stakeholders and critics of government to come out with<br \/>\ncredible ideas on the review of the constitution and electoral reforms<br \/>\ncan be improved rather than hiding.<\/p>\n<p>The call was made in Calabar by the chairman of the committee Senator<br \/>\nKen Nnamani\u00a0 at its public hearing in the South South zone.<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8220;this is the time to bring our ideas on how best government<br \/>\ncan improve on our Constitution as well as our Electoral Reforms in<br \/>\nthis country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=12538&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The committee, he said, is ready to listen and digest all ideas and<br \/>\nrecommendations put forward to in preparing the final report.<\/p>\n<p>According to him &#8220;democracy is not worth it if the people do not have<br \/>\nthe right to cast their votes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that there has been a progressive improvement in our<br \/>\nelectoral processes from 2007\/2011 and 2014 general elections in the<br \/>\ncountry<\/p>\n<p>Nnamani said &#8220;for those who hide out there to criticise this is the<br \/>\ntime for you to come out from your hiding and state your views and<br \/>\nideas that could improve our current situation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He added that &#8220;the development of any nation begins from the ballot<br \/>\nboxes and that our electoral system must be put right once and for<br \/>\nall&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The former Senate President said\u00a0 &#8220;if we can get our electoral process<br \/>\nright Nigeria would have been heading towards rapid and massive<br \/>\ndevelopment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation,<br \/>\nAbubakar Malami who was represented by his Special Adviser on Public<br \/>\nProsecution, Chief Okoi Obono Obla recalled that the committee was set<br \/>\nup to take a holistic look at the Constitution and the Electoral<br \/>\nReforms.<\/p>\n<p>The Executive he said is doing everything possible toward improving<br \/>\nour electoral system in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>He called on stakeholders not to shy away but make good use of the<br \/>\npublic hearing to proffer ideas and views on how to review the<br \/>\nconstitution and electoral reforms.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, the state governor Senator Ben Ayade who was<br \/>\nrepresented by his deputy Prof. Ivara Isu, said political decampees<br \/>\nshould be punishable and should be included in the electoral reforms.<br \/>\nThere should be a stiff penalty against political decampees.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested the return to only two political parties as presently<br \/>\nthere are too many registered parry.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, most of the speakers at the public hearing had called for the<br \/>\nscrapping state INEC and allow the national INEC should stand.<\/p>\n<p>They also suggested for the adoption of Option A4 as it were during<br \/>\nthe Ibrahim Babangida regime, abolition of collection centres,<br \/>\nestablishment of special courts for election cases as well as seeing<br \/>\nelectoral fraud as a very serious offence.<\/p>\n<p>Other issues raised includes time to end tribunal matters, acceptance<br \/>\nof smart card reading during elections as well as to define who is a<br \/>\npolitical leader in the state or local and ward levels.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were drawn from political parties, communities, academia,<br \/>\ngovernment officials and civil organisations among others.<\/p>\n<p><script async
