{"id":12344,"date":"2016-11-14T14:14:05","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T14:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=12344"},"modified":"2016-11-14T14:14:05","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T14:14:05","slug":"blood-transfusion-unsafe-expensive-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=12344","title":{"rendered":"Blood transfusion unsafe, expensive \u2013Experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blood-transmission.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12345\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blood-transmission-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"blood-transmission\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blood-transmission-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blood-transmission-272x182.jpg 272w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blood-transmission.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>At a two-day scientific conference organised by the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Society, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Cross River State, the Education and Curriculum Director of the BMSS, Prof. Etim Ekanem, told <em>SUNDAY PUNCH <\/em>that a curriculum would be developed to keep Nigerian medical personnel abreast of modern medicine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-g-rec td-g-rec-id-content_inlineright\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cApart from the dangers of blood transfusion and blood products management, blood is becoming scarce due to fewer donors and to process few units of blood is expensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA unit of blood can cost about N15, 000 excluding the cost of managing a patient,\u201d Ekanem said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Head, Bloodless Surgery Unit, UCTH, Dr. Nathaniel Usoro, medical scientists have not proven the efficacy of blood transfusion.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=11572&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern practice of medicine is evidence-based, and use of any therapy requires proof of efficacy.\u00a0 After decades of blood transfusion, medical scientists are unable to prove its efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, evidence of harm continues to accumulate, not just hazards, but adverse outcome in transfused patients compared to non-transfused patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Usoro also drew attention to the risks involved in blood transfusion.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, when screening blood for donation, laboratories usually test for only HIV, hepatitis B, C and syphilis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in good laboratories, donor blood is routinely tested for only four pathogens: HIV, hepatitis B, C and syphilis. Many laboratories do not test at all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>During blood transfusion, he said the blood recipient could be exposed to \u201ctransmission of infection, delayed hemolytic, allergic and febrile reactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other risks, he said, included circulatory overload, iron overload, hypothermia and clerical error.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made several presentations on bloodless care to hospitals in various parts of the country.\u00a0 We have also made several presentations to professional bodies. However, many doctors are unaware of the newer information regarding transfusion, while some are stuck to medical tradition and resist change regarding transfusion practices,\u201d Usoro said.
