{"id":12184,"date":"2016-11-01T20:18:10","date_gmt":"2016-11-01T20:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=12184"},"modified":"2016-11-01T20:18:10","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T20:18:10","slug":"niger-delta-leaders-16-point-demand-to-buhari-that-may-restore-peace-in-the-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=12184","title":{"rendered":"Niger Delta Leaders&#8217; 16-point demand to Buhari that may restore peace in the region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p>Leaders of the Niger Delta region have presented a 16-point demand to President Muhammadu Buhari, handing out proposals they say would help restore peace to the oil-rich region.<\/p>\n<p>The demands were presented Tuesday at a meeting between the leaders and the president.<\/p>\n<p>Governors and ministers from the region, alongside political leaders including Edwin Clark and former governor, Victor Attah, were at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was attended by over a hundred representatives from the region.<\/p>\n<p>President Buhari admitted that there were no quick fixes to the region\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n<p><code><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=11389&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p>Top on the list of demands is the relocation of the administrative and operational headquarters of major International Oil Companies (IOCs) to the Niger Delta region. The leaders say the decision would fast-track the development of the region.<\/p>\n<p>The region\u2019s leaders, under the aegis of Pan Niger Delta Forum, also demanded the clean-up of other communities affected by spill, besides Ogoniland.<\/p>\n<p>They also asked for a review of the amnesty programme\u2019s core mandate of providing a robust exit strategy, to ensure that those trained have jobs to return to or are given stipends.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cat.fr.eu.criteo.com\/delivery\/lg.php?cppv=1&amp;cpp=m3by1XxBaW9GNExGQ0FlSUJXMk5KOUcrUUE1MjhwSEtOaWNLamIwY0dINElUSkgySGpDVHhMRE4xa2FyaVJsU1ZMQm1CNlVNQTZOU25pcUlqdW5RaTdNY3k1K1FyMkFGVkFMNkEweUpBL2EyOUltVnQ3MnFqT0NKUS9pSlQ0c1ZBWElJZ0pWNFRubGUvWWw5dnFjblQzSEh5Y2paVzl5d3JsVklVMmlWeFFrb2wwc2ljc081SnVhMkc3UWNuZWI2SEx5ME9sajNMUEUydVFyOXhxZkdKNFZqOEROcS9HeTdzbTdoOEY2OUViRzJlMmJBPXw%3D\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Briefing journalists after the closed-door meeting, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, alongside the Minister of Niger Delta, Usani Usani, Edwin Clarke, King Alfred Diette Spiff, the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass and Francis Tabai, a retired justice, said the meeting was the first of several meetings that would hold quarterly in different states in the region.<\/p>\n<p>They said the dialogue had already begun to yield results as daily oil production had reached 2.1 million barrel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat that means is that it is going to be an ongoing engagement. It will never finish. The Ministry of Petroleum is continuing a quarterly meeting involving the oil companies who fairly beaten up a little bit today and the governors and the stakeholders which will happen once every 3 months,\u201d Mr. Kachikwu said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one is going to happen in Uyo in December and we are going to rotate that between the states so that we will have a platform irrespective of the negotiation that is going on to deal with the<br \/>\nissues and continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that as of today and this morning, we are at 2.1 million barrels production. That\u2019s substantial. That would not have happened without efforts that went behind through the royal fathers and leaders, through the militant leaders. A lot of behind-the-scene engagements had taken place and will continue to take place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The oil minister said the president, in his response, said there was no quick solution to the problems, and that he would prefer to go to the roots of the Niger Delta problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to dig in and find a final solution,\u201d Mr. Kachikwu said.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Clark, who spoke on behalf of the group, said the president received the document and \u201cwill now set the ball rolling with the Minister assisting him. Then we will appoint a very capable team of experts to negotiate on our behalf\u201d.
