Environmental Rights Action\/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA\/FoEN) and labour unions in the water sector have presented what they believe is a solution to the water crisis to the Lagos State government.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3158\"><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3159\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Akinbode Oluwafemi, ERA\/FoEN Deputy Executive Director, proposed among others, a collective investment in water infrastructure and democratic decision-making that priorities the human right to water above profits is the way forward.<span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3160\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3164\"><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3165\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">At the public presentation of the book \u2013Lagos Water Crisis: Alternative Roadmap for Water Sector the group\u00a0warned\u00a0against\u00a0 a Public Private Patnerships (PPPs)\u00a0 initiative promoted by the Word bank through the International Finance Corporation (IFC).\u00a0The groups\u00a0revealed that the same PPP had failed in India,\u00a0Philippines, Tanzania and Ghana.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_4363\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Sani Baba, Public Services International Subrgional secretary for East and West Africa said that the document\u00a0was\u00a0the solution that the\u00a0Lagos government\u00a0was looking\u00a0for, as it puts the human rights issues ad welfare of Lagos residents first.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yqtfd82132\" class=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yqt6553866601\">\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3169\"><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3170\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The event which held at Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja was graced by a coalition of civil society, labour unions and grassroots mobilisers on the platform of <b id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3171\">Our Water Our Right Coalition<\/b> which, has since 2014 petitioned the Lagos state government and mobilised residents to take to the streets to resist the PPP plans.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3175\"><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3176\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The groups insist that there is no solution outside privatization for the 21 million residents of Lagos, most of whom depend on unwholesome sources of water due to the corruption, lack of transparency and accountability and decay in infrastructure managed by the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC).<\/span><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3179\" style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3180\"><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3181\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The document is a joint effort by the Environmental Rights Action\/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Corporate Accountability International, Public Services International (PSI), Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU) and Transnational Institute (TNI).<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3185\"><span id=\"m_-6951539471175601236yiv0563515057yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1477737276363_3186\" style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The document faults the current Lagos State Water Masterplan which it says will lead to violations of the human right to water and deny citizens universal access to safe drinking water.
