{"id":12046,"date":"2016-10-22T22:19:27","date_gmt":"2016-10-22T22:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=12046"},"modified":"2016-10-22T22:23:31","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T22:23:31","slug":"mamman-daura-can-he-influence-buhari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=12046","title":{"rendered":"MAMMAN DAURA: Can he influence Buhari?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mamman<a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mamman-Daura.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12047\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mamman-Daura-272x300.jpg\" alt=\"mamman-daura\" width=\"272\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mamman-Daura-272x300.jpg 272w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mamman-Daura.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/a> Daura is today described as the \u201cmost powerful nephew\u201d in Nigeria by virtue of his closeness to President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the centre of the recent complaints by Aisha, Buhari\u2019s wife, is that those who did not participate in the campaign\u00a0were the ones calling the shots in her husband\u2019s government<\/p>\n<p><code><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=11243&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p>TheCable understands that Duara is one of those she was referring to, having already complained privately about him.<\/p>\n<p>However, what has often not been reported is how Daura came to wield so much influence on Buhari.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0is the son of Buhari\u2019s elder brother, but since Daura is three years older, the president\u00a0is \u201cawkwardly\u201d his uncle.<\/p>\n<p>Daura, often described by associates as \u201cextremely intelligent and brilliant\u201d, was a journalist and an industrialist, serving as head of the African International Bank and also chairman of the board of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).<\/p>\n<p>He was editor of New Nigerian in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>In the book, Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria, John Paden, an American professor, offers a historical insight into the significant role Daura played in the formative years of his \u201cuncle\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SETTLE DOWN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Paden, it was Daura, along with Waziri al-Hassan (Buhari\u2019s foster father), that encouraged Buhari, a reluctant student in his early years, \u201cto settle down and take his studies seriously\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It was also Daura that \u201cstrongly encouraged\u201d Buhari to join the military in 1961.<\/p>\n<p>Daura, Paden wrote, would become a \u201clife-long inspiration and confidant to Buhari\u201d who guided him all through his formative years.<\/p>\n<p>Buhari would go on to become military head of state in the final years of his career.<\/p>\n<p>So while Aisha might have been married to Buhari for 27 years, Daura had known her husband for 73 years.<\/p>\n<p>Paden revealed that \u201cafter the death of his mother in December 1988, Buhari was released and traveled to Daura for the mourning. When he arrived in Daura, he found his farm much as he had left it. His senior brother (the father of Mamman Daura), along with the Barden Daura, had managed the cattle, sheep, and horses in his absence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The George Mason University professor \u00a0wrote: \u201cWhen Buhari\u2019s father died, Waziri al-Hasan \u2013 the son of Emir Musa \u00ad became the guardian of Zulaihat (Buhari\u2019s mother) and her six children, including her youngest,\u00a0 Muhammadu. This played\u00a0 a\u00a0 major\u00a0 role in the upbringing of Buhari.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis extensive kinship network also affected the future of Buhari in another important way. His senior brother was the father of Mamman Daura, who was three years older than Buhari, although technically his nephew. Mamman would become a life-long inspiration and confidant to Buhari. He was especially critical in encouraging Buhari to pursue lifelong education.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many boys at that time and place, Buhari went to Quranic school before going to primary school. He was not enthusiastic about these studies. Early each morning, he would get up and have to fetch firewood for his teacher for the evening Qur\u2019anic readings. There were also several hours of Qur\u2019anic lessons in the morning, at a time when Buhari would rather be outside playing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn part because of his love of the outdoors, Buhari was a reluctant student in his early years. He would often skip school altogether, although this always resulted in beatings with a cane by the schoolmaster. Only with the encouragement of Waziri al-Hasan and Mamman Daura did he eventually settle down and take his studies\u00a0 seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>NIGHTMARE VENTURES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Young northern boys were being encouraged to join the army in the years around Nigeria\u2019s independence, and Buhari was encouraged by his uncle to consider a military carrier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, the Emir of Katsina, whose emirate adjoined Daura\u00a0 Emirate, was encouraging bright\u00a0 young men to go into the military and train to become officers.\u00a0 His own son, Hassan Katsina, had\u00a0 become a military officer,\u201d Paden wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Buhari was considering his options in 1960, Hassan Katsina would often take the secondary school boys out for night hikes and to sleep under the stars. Buhari enjoyed the great sense of adventure of these nighttime ventures into nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to considering the military because of the example set by Hassan Katsina, Buhari recognized that officer training provided\u00a0 a pathway to further education. Yet\u00a0 another impetus was provided\u00a0 by Mamman Daura, who strongly encouraged his \u201cyounger uncle\u201d to consider officer training and higher education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuhari, who was now nineteen years old, had to take several exams even to be considered for officer training. He was able to pass English, mathematics, and general knowledge, plus he met the physical requirements. Still, the competition was nationwide, and only about seventy boys would be selected for officer candidate school. Of these, only half would be commissioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe competition was thus stiff, but Buhari was among those selected.
