{"id":11870,"date":"2016-10-11T07:40:02","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T07:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=11870"},"modified":"2016-10-11T07:40:02","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T07:40:02","slug":"prof-paden-buhari-wants-to-recover-looted-funds-not-jailing-anybody-thats-why-jonathan-obasanjo-others-are-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/?p=11870","title":{"rendered":"Prof: Paden: Buhari wants to recover looted funds not jailing anybody, that&#8217;s why Jonathan, Obasanjo others are free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><code><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- www.deltanewsroom.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2163942495525027\" data-ad-slot=\"1411897411\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>John Paden, the authorised\u00a0biographer of President Muhammadu Buhari, says the president had evidence to put former President Goodluck Jonathan in jail for corruption, but he did not want to do so.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his book, \u2018Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria,\u2019 Paden, a professor of international studies, wrote that Buhari was more concerned about recovering stolen funds than about jailing anybody.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeadvert.com\/show.php?z=30&amp;pl=11064&amp;ad_type=59&amp;rl=180\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He said Buhari had letters in his possession showing Jonathan\u2019s request for off-budget funds.<\/p>\n<p>Buhari recently praised Jonathan\u2019s \u201cpatriotism\u201d for the post-election stability in 2015 and it would appear \u2013 from Paden\u2019s account \u2013 that the president was concerned\u00a0about the political implications of putting his predecessor on trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of the early months of 2016, it appeared that the EFCC was not going after Jonathan. Nor was it going after former president Obasanjo. The question of the stability of the entire political system seemed at stake,\u201d Paden wrote in chapter 20, page 203.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, a number of senior military officers who had served as head of state \u2013 from Babangida to Abubakar \u2013 seemed off limits. Indeed, rumours swirled that if the probes went after senior officers, they might push back, because they had extensive networks in the active military services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, the knowledge such heavyweights possessed could well be traded for immunity, and would help to illuminate the patterns and sources of corruption. Buhari had letters in his possession showing Jonathan\u2019s requests for off-budget funds. But Buhari\u2019s larger purpose was not to put former high-level officials in jail. Rather, it was to retrieve stolen funds and to change the political culture of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s biographer in chapter 8, page 67 also alleged that Jonathan withdrew \u201cenormous\u201d funds from the treasury as the March 28 presidential election approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe threat of postelection violence was palpable. There would be winners and losers, quite likely with a regional or ethnoreligious profile. The international community was deeply concerned. Was Nigeria on the brink? High level diplomatic demarches were made to both candidates. A highly publicised \u2018Peace Accord\u2019 was signed by Jonathan and Buhari.
