The Agency noted that about 4.4 Million Nigerians are at risk with the country being unable to provide the resources to tackle the problem.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator has said that Nigeria will require $164 million in humanitarian funding to prevent thousands of deaths from malnutrition in its war-torn northeast, he said this week.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing conflict between Nigeria\u2019s military and the Boko Haram insurgency is to blame for the growing hunger crisis in the northeast, humanitarian officials say.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-year-old war has disrupted planting and marketplaces, killed more than 20,000 people and forced 2.7 million to flee in Nigeria and neighboring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got as many as 250,000 children in the northeast of Nigeria who are severely acutely malnourished and we could lose up to 50,000 children before the end of the year if we don\u2019t scale up right now,\u201d Toby Lanzer, the U.N.\u2019s regional humanitarian coordinator for the Sahel, told VOA.<\/p>\n<p>The northeast coordinator for Boko Haram Muhammed Kanar said camps in the northeast set up to house people displaced by the Boko Haram conflict are swelling with new arrivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is getting overwhelming, because of the liberation of [displaced people] from local governments, liberated communities,\u201d Kanar said.<\/p>\n<p>One camp in the town of Monguno recently grew from 4,000 people to 30,000, and he expects it to grow further.<\/p>\n<p>Lanzer said 4.4 million people in northeastern Nigeria are \u201cseverely food insecure,\u201d but the country doesn\u2019t have the resources to tackle this problem alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Nigeria-map.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9844\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9844\" src=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Nigeria-map-300x224.png\" alt=\"Nigeria map\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Nigeria-map-300x224.png 300w, http:\/\/newsroom247.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Nigeria-map.png 654w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The price of oil, Nigeria\u2019s top export, has declined globally, and the country has been particularly hard-hit by militant attacks on its petroleum infrastructure that have dropped production from around two million barrels per-day to about 1.5 million barrels.<br \/>\nThe economy contracted in the first quarter, and many economists believe Africa\u2019s biggest economy is poised to enter a recession. Last week, the IMF\u2019s representative in the country told Bloomberg News that he expects Nigeria\u2019s economy to shrink overall this year.<\/p>\n<p>Lanzer says international donors need to step in to stop thousands of deaths from malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria\u2019s fiscal situation is such that the country is stretched. And to expect Nigeria to step up all the way to type of levels of assistance that are required may be a very big ask for the international community,\u201d Lanzer said.<\/p>\n<p>In total, $221 million needs to be raised for the four countries affected by the fighting and resulting food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis may worsen.
